Pistons sale not likely to be done until February

Gregg Krupa of the Detroit News reports:

March 28 2010: Detroit Pistons' Richard Hamilton (32) during the NBA basketball game between the Chicago Bulls and Detroit Piston at the Palace in Auburn Hills, Michigan.

The Pistons are unlikely to be sold until at least February, the firm handling the sale for Karen Davidson has informed potential buyers.

Citibank, which was hired by the widow of the late owner of the Pistons, Bill Davidson, to represent the franchise for the sale, informed potential buyers last week that the deal is unlikely to be completed until the NBA All-Star Game. The advisory to the potential buyers was confirmed by sources close to the deal.

Among the potential buyers are Mike, Marian and Christopher Ilitch and their company, Ilitch Holdings Co.; the Beverly Hills financier Tom Gores; and a group headed by George Postolos, a former executive of the NBA and the Houston Rockets.

A report out of the Middle East that investors from Dubai and Qatar were among the potential buyers was denied by the NBA.

Allen Iverson scores two points in Turkish league debut

ISTANBUL (Nov. 21) – It was not the first time Allen Iverson stepped into Besiktas Akatlar Arena, but it was the first time he saw the hall exceed its capacity. The Besiktas Cola Turka game against visiting Fenerbahce Ulker, defending champions in Turkish Basketball League was extremely important for the fans, since the opponent was the biggest rival of the club. After scoring 15 points on Tuesday against Hemofarm in Eurocup, Iverson disappointed his 3,500 fans in his Turkish league debut on Sunday by only scoring two points. More frustratingly for the fans, Besiktas, also known as Black Eagles, lost the game 74-67.

Looking physically unfit to be of much help, Iverson had an hard time against Omer Onan, the shooting guard of Fenerbahce who won silver in 2010 FIBA World Championship with the Turkish National Team. ‘The answer’ sat on the bench for the entire second and fourth periods, and he scored his only two points in the third, while Onan was not on the court. Aside from hitting only one of his six shot attempts in 19 minutes, Iverson had four rebounds and two turnovers.

These statistics were not bad enough to stop Besiktas fans from cheering for Iverson the whole game. But it’s not hard to guess that this reaction will change if the results stay the same. There is a possibility that the expectations are not as low as assumed.

“Iverson is one of the legends of basketball. I assume he’s not training regularly since more than one year. That’s why we need to be patient,” said one of Besiktas fans during halftime. But when his expectations for the whole season were asked, he didn’t seem that modest: “He should star by his own and be a team player at the same time. But the most important thing is that he should make us champions.”

Besiktas coach Burak Biyiktay sounded like he is not sure what to do with an unfit NBA star. “The expectations are so high regarding Iverson. But he’s unfit and unready. On the other hand we all want to see him play for a long time. So it’s a problem whether he plays or not,” said Besiktas’s low-profile coach in his post-game interview. “Today, he played almost 20 minutes, but did no help to the team. Allen Iverson is not the Allen Iverson that we know. He needs time.”

The Black Eagles lost both games with AI, and in Turkey even three defeats in a row can trigger a crisis. “Iverson may cause the coach to get fired in a month” said Onur Erdem, a reporter for NTV Spor, one of the most respected sport channels in Turkey. “Fans’ expectations are getting higher every day and Biyiktay, under the pressure of the fans, is letting Iverson play although he is not ready. In fact everybody is well aware that this roster can’t win the league. But with Iverson involved, people may start to think that the roster needs a high-profile coach. The situation is similar to Miami Heat, where people started to think that Erik Spoelstra won’t be able to handle a roster involving LeBron, Bosh and Wade.”

‘The answer’ has a two-year contract with Besiktas. But he is be able to leave the club next summer if he gets an offer from the NBA. He needs to start playing regularly soon and put up good statistics to be able to get the attention of NBA teams. But it seems that he needs to be patient and get into shape, quickly. As long as he’s physically unfit, it’s tough for him to be of much help.

How can this paradox be solved, that’s the question that Besiktas needs to find the answer.

Allen Iverson scores 15 points in Turkey debut

The AP reports:

Allen Iverson scores 15 points in Turkey debut

Former NBA All-Star Allen Iverson has scored 15 points in his debut for Besiktas Cola Turka but failed to carry his team to victory against Hemofarm Stada.

Hemofarm Stada defeated Besiktas 94-91 in a European Cup game on Tuesday in Istanbul. Turkish fans shouted “Allen Iverson, the son of Besiktas Cola Turka” during the match.

Tayshaun Prince, coach John Kuester exchange words

Marc J. Spears of Yahoo reports:

Detroit Pistons forward Tayshaun Prince accepted blame for a heated exchange with head coach John Kuester during the team’s 101-97 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Monday night. Prince also didn’t guarantee it would be the last incident between player and coach.

“I hope it doesn’t happen again,” Prince said. “I can’t say it won’t because I’m the type of guy that if I don’t see something right, I got to say something.”

The confrontation started after Prince didn’t fight through a double screen in time to stop Warriors guard Reggie Williams from hitting a 3-pointer that put the Pistons in a 25-point hole with 4:27 left in the second quarter. Kuester called a quick timeout and voiced his displeasure to Prince, who barked back at his coach on the bench. As the argument continued, Kuester motioned for a Pistons security official to remove Prince from the bench. Kuester started to walk toward Prince, but was restrained by assistant coach Darrell Walker.

Allen Iverson debut in Turkey likely Tuesday

The AP reports:

Former NBA All-Star Allen Iverson’s debut with Turkish basketball league team Besiktas has been postponed.

Team manager Murat Murtezaoglu told The Associated Press the 11-time NBA All-Star “did not feel ready” to play Friday and instead watched from the stands as his new team beat Oyak Renault 87-81.

Murtezaoglu said he expects Iverson to make his debut at Besiktas’ European Cup home game against Hemofarm Stada on Tuesday.

Charlie Villanueva wants to fight Kevin Garnett

Kevin Garnett is known for trash-talking, and every now and then he rubs someone the wrong way, in a big way. Such is the case now.

Chris Iott of Michigan Live reports:

Charlie Villanueva wants to fight Kevin Garnett

The Detroit Pistons’ Charlie Villanueva and Boston Celtics’ Kevin Garnett were whistled for technical fouls at the same point in the third quarter of Tuesday night’s game.

Villanueva Twitter quotes from after midnight Tuesday night

First: “KG talks a lot of crap, he’s prob never been in a fight, I would love to get in a ring with him, I will expose him.”

Then: “KG called me a cancer patient. I’m pissed because, u know how many people died from cancer, and he’s tossing it like it’s a joke.”

And then: “I wouldn’t even trip about that, but a cancer patient, I know way 2 many people who passed away from it, and I have a special place 4 those.”

InsideHoops.com editor says: Assuming KG really did say what’s quoted above, of course I gotta support Villanueva in this one, who is angry for the right reasons. Though as for KG, I’ll say that the purpose of trash-talking is to piss the other guy off and in this case it appears to have worked. Of course, there are ways to trash-talk that don’t involve mentioning diseases, death, etc. — and that’s what Villanueva is quite rightly annoyed about.

Tracy McGrady will be limited to 15 minutes per game

Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press reports:

Tracy McGrady will be limited to 15 minutes per game

After being shut down for the preseason after playing only eight minutes, McGrady finally returned to practice Sunday. He confirmed that he will be limited to around 15 minutes per game for the time being. McGrady, 31, has hardly played the last two seasons because of a left knee that was surgically repaired in February 2009.

“They put minutes on me. I think it’s around 15,” McGrady said. “I’m only playing 15 minutes, so when I’m out there, I’m going as hard as I can go.”

Pistons players Jonas Jerebko and Terrico White have surgery

The Detroit Pistons announced today that forward Jonas Jerebko and guard Terrico White underwent successful surgical procedures performed by Dr. Art Manoli and team orthopedic surgeon Dr. Stephen Lemos.  The procedures were performed at Detroit Medical Center Surgical Center in Madison Heights, MI.

Jerebko underwent a successful procedure to repair a partially ruptured Achilles tendon on his right leg.  He is expected to miss the next five-to-six months.

White underwent a successful procedure to repair a fractured fifth metatarsal in his right foot.  The foot will be immobile during a recovery process lasting approximately six weeks and rehabilitation will begin immediately following that period.  White’s playing status will be updated once the rehabilitation process begins.

Jonas Jerebko out five months with torn Achilles

Vincent Goodwill of the Detroit News reports:

The Pistons already-thin frontcourt suffered a major loss when second-year forward Jonas Jerebko suffered a torn Achilles tendon Tuesday night in Miami.

Jerebko, who averaged 9.3 points and six rebounds last year, will undergo surgery Friday and is expected to miss at least five months. He landed awkwardly on a drive in the first quarter.

Pistons coach John Kuester sat with Jerebko, 23, on the ride home, trying to keep his spirits up. It’s no question Jerebko’s willingness to improve made him one of Kuester’s favorites.

“He’s a competitor, but he’ll attack his rehab the way he does everything else: the right way,” Kuester said.

Jerebko, a 6-foot-9 power forward, was successful playing next to Ben Wallace because of his boundless energy, which made up for his NBA inexperience (he played professionally overseas) and was one of the team’s best offensive rebounders. Jerebko’s not a natural scorer, but being consistently active helped him be in the right place at the right time.
