Nets trade Troy Murphy to Warriors for Brandan Wright, Dan Gadzuric

The New Jersey Nets have acquired forward Brandan Wright and center Dan Gadzuric from the Golden State Warriors in exchange for forward Troy Murphy and the Nets’ second round draft pick in 2012, Nets General Manager Billy King announced today.

“We are very pleased to add Dan and Brandan to our roster,” said King. “Dan is an NBA veteran who will add depth to our frontcourt rotation, while Brandan is a young player who we feel has significant room to grow and develop in our system.”

Wright, 6’10”, 220, was selected by the Charlotte Bobcats with the eighth overall pick in the first round of the 2007 NBA Draft.  He was then traded to Golden State for Jason Richardson and the draft rights to Jermareo Davidson.  The fourth-year forward from North Carolina holds career averages of 5.7 points and 3.0 rebounds in 12.8 minutes per contest.  Wright missed the entire 2009-10 season after having left shoulder surgery, an injury that he suffered in training camp.  In 21 games, one start, with the Warriors this season, he averaged 4.0 points and 2.0 rebounds in 9.3 minutes while shooting .603 (38-63) from the field.

Gadzuric, 6’11”, 245, was selected by the Milwaukee Bucks (34th overall) in the second round of the 2002 NBA Draft.  Currently in his ninth NBA season, the Den Haag, Netherlands native holds career averages of 4.7 points, 4.4 rebounds and 0.8 blocks in 14.9 minutes.  In 511 career games, including 159 starts, he is shooting .502 (1,032-2,057) from the field and .501 (362-722) from the line.  In 12 career postseason games, he averaged 3.3 points and 2.4 rebounds while shooting .633 (19-30) from the field in 8.4 minutes.  This season, Gadzuric has played in 28 games, four starts, and averaged 2.8 points and 3.1 rebounds in 10.6 minutes while shooting .420 (37-88) from the field.

Murphy, acquired by New Jersey on August 11, 2010 from Indiana, has played in 18 games for the Nets this season, averaging 3.6 points and 4.2 rebounds in 16.0 minutes per game.  The 6’11” forward has played in 639 NBA games with Golden State, Indiana and New Jersey, with career averages of 11.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.

Warriors assign Jeremy Lin to D-League

The Golden State Warriors have assigned guard Jeremy Lin to the Reno Bighorns of the NBA Development League, the team announced today.

Lin, 22, has appeared in 17 games for the Warriors this season, averaging 1.9 points and 1.12 steals in 8.5 minutes per contest.

This will mark his second stint with the Bighorns this season.

Lin appeared in four games with Reno earlier this season, averaging 18.0 points and 2.8 assists.

He was recalled by the Warriors on January 3, but has been on the team’s inactive list since his return (last three games).

Hedo Turkoglu gave Magic fans a glowing demonstration of why the team made him a key figure in its massive reorganization two weeks ago.

Turkoglu, part of two trades involving eight players that Orlando engineered to reload its roster, had 10 points, 10 assists and 14 rebounds in the Magic’s 110-90 rout over Golden State on Monday night.

“I’m glad I finally did something to help this team win,” said Turkoglu, who has been steady in nearly every game since his return to the Magic. “When I have the ball in my hands, I’m able to do the things I’m good at. My strength is to be the guy who is a facilitator, get my shot or find one for my teammates.”

It was the third triple-double of his career and helped the Magic run their winning streak to six games. Dwight Howard scored 22 points and grabbed 17 rebounds.

Not too long ago, Warriors small forward Dorell Wright was struggling with his shot. After going 4 for 13 in a home loss to the Houston Rockets on Dec. 20, he was at 38.4 percent shooting for the season.

Then, something happened.

In the six games since the loss to Houston, Wright has averaged 23.3 points on 58.4 percent shooting, capped with Saturday’s 30 points in the road loss to the Miami Heat.

What happened? A confluence of things.

Primarily, Wright has been given the opportunity. Coach Keith Smart has given Wright the green light on offense, and Wright is starting to figure out his avenues for scoring among the starters. And he doesn’t have to worry about coming out of the game, especially while backup Rodney Carney was injured. Wright is averaging 38.9 minutes per contest.

“I don’t have to worry about anything,” said Wright, who along with the other starters were allowed to skip Sunday’s practice at AmericanAirlines Arena. “Just go out there and play my game. There is no better feeling than that, having your coach behind you and wanting you to go out there and show him everything.”

Warriors assign Jeremy Lin to D-League

Golden State Warriors guard Jeremy Lin was assigned to the Reno Bighorns, the Warriors’ NBA Development League affiliate, it was announced today.  The assignment marks the 23rd time in the 2010-11 season an NBA player has been assigned to an NBA D-League affiliate, and it is the first assignment for Lin, a rookie out of Harvard.

Lin (6-3, 200) has appeared in 17 games this season for Golden State, averaging 1.9 points in 8.5 minutes. In the 2010 NBA Summer League, Lin averaged 9.8 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists in five games with the Dallas Mavericks.

The Warriors signed Lin as an undrafted free agent in July. In four years at Harvard, Lin averaged 12.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists. He became the first player in Ivy League history to record 1,450 points, 450 rebounds, 400 assists and 200 steals, and was one of 11 finalists for the Bob Cousy Award as a senior.

Lin joins the Bighorns for Reno’s game tonight versus the Tulsa 66ers.

Last year, forward Reggie Williams spent Christmas in his apartment in Sioux Falls, S.D.

In the morning, he walked through a foot of snow to buy groceries from a Wal-Mart across the street. He and roommate Leemire Goldwire, his teammate in the NBA Development League, cooked and ate Christmas dinner together. By that evening, they were glued to the couch waiting for the tipoff of the Denver-Portland game on ESPN, dreaming about the day they would get their shots in the NBA.

“It seems like just yesterday,” Williams, 24, said. “Now, I’m spending Christmas in California, in beautiful weather and about to play on national TV. My family can watch me play.”

Tonight Williams again will be waiting for the tipoff of a game involving Portland on ESPN (and CSNBA). But this time, he is playing in it. The Warriors host the Trail Blazers in the nightcap of the NBA’s five-game Christmas Day schedule.

This time last year, Williams was an overlooked star in the D-League, watching other D-Leaguers get called up to the big show ahead of him.

“My dream was to play in the NBA,” Williams said. “So for me to play on Christmas Day and on national TV, that’s a pretty big achievement.”

Warriors hire Lloyd Pierce as an assistant coach

The Golden State Warriors have hired Lloyd Pierce as an assistant coach, the team announced today. Pierce joins the Warriors after spending the previous three seasons as the player development coordinator for the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he worked closely with the team’s players on individual skill development.

A Bay Area native from San Jose, Pierce attended Santa Clara University from 1994-1998, where he was a four-year letterman and helped lead the Broncos to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances.  Following his college career, Pierce played professionally in Mexico, Australia and Germany before returning to Santa Clara to join the team’s coaching staff under Dick Davey.

Pierce, 34, fills the vacancy on the Warriors coaching staff that was created when assistant coach Stephen Silas left the team to join his father Paul’s staff with the Charlotte Bobcats.  Paul Silas was named interim head coach of the Bobcats on Wednesday.

Warriors sign Acie Law; Jeff Adrien waived

The Golden State Warriors have signed free agent guard Acie Law, the team announced today.  Terms of the deal were not released.  To make room for Law on the team’s 15-man roster, the Warriors have waived rookie forward Jeff Adrien.

Law, 25, began the season with the Memphis Grizzlies, averaging 1.1 points, 1.0 rebound and 1.3 assists in 8.5 minutes over 11 games before being waived on December 4.  Currently in his fourth NBA season, Law has appeared in 148 regular-season games with Atlanta, Chicago, Charlotte, Golden State and Memphis, owning career averages of 3.5 points, 1.0 rebound and 1.6 assists per contest.  He began the 2009-10 campaign with Golden State, where he averaged 6.2 points and 1.4 assists over five games before being traded to Charlotte on November 16, 2009.

Adrien appeared in 15 games for Golden State, averaging 2.9 points and 3.3 rebounds in 10.8 minutes per contest.
