Rockets notes after beating Blazers

Monday night the Houston Rockets, playing at home, defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 95-83.

With a 95-83 win tonight, the Rockets have won 11 of their last 12 games, including an active run of four consecutive victories at Toyota Center (1/29/08-2/11/08) to set the team’s longest winning streak at home this season. Houston also captured its seventh victory in a row, which stands as the team’s longest winning streak since the 2004-05 Rockets captured their final seven games of that season (4/7/05-4/20/05).

Houston has won the last three games by a double-digit margin: 92-77 (+15) vs. Cleveland (2/7/08), 108-89 (+19) vs. Atlanta (2/9/08) and 95-83 (+12) tonight. It marks the first time since March 2007 for the Rockets to grab three consecutive victories by 10 or more points (3/16/07-3/20/07).

The Rockets have held the Trail Blazers to less than 20 points in seven of 12 quarters played this season, including 19 points in both the second and third quarters of tonight’s games. Overall, Houston has limited Portland to 80.7 points per game in 2007-08. The Rockets have also won five of the last six meetings between these teams.

The Rockets had all five starters in double-digit scoring for the first time this season. Overall, Houston has had five players reach double-figure scoring totals in five of its last six games.

Yao Ming led the Rockets with 25 points (11-13 FT) to go along with his seven rebounds. Yao is averaging 28.2 points (141 TP) and 12.8 rebounds (64 TR) over the last five outings he has played at Toyota Center.

Rafer Alston, who finished with 17 points and seven assists, has scored a combined 25 points (8.3 ppg) on 9-of-13 (.692) shooting in the third quarter of the last three games, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range.

Luis Scola has averaged 11.8 points on 41-of-70 (.586) shooting since entering the starting lineup vs. Utah (1/27/08). Scola has helped the Rockets to a 7-1 (.875) record over his first eight NBA starts.

LaMarcus Aldridge posted 22 points on 10-of-26 shooting, setting a career high in field goal attempts (prev. high: 23 on 12/3/07 at Memphis). Aldridge has now scored over 20 points in each of his last three games after hitting the 20-point mark just twice in his previous 17 outings.

Brandon Roy had 15 points, five rebounds and a game-high eight assists in his return outing for Portland. Roy had missed the last two consecutive games (family matters).

Rockets – Blazers team connections

Rick Adelman still ranks as the second winningest coach in Trail Blazers history behind Jack Ramsay, racking up a record of 291-154 (.654) in the regular season and a 36-33 (.522) mark in the postseason.

Adelman twice coached the Trail Blazers into the NBA Finals, qualifying Portland for the playoffs in all six of his seasons.

Elston Turner also served as an assistant coach with Portland.

T.R. Dunn was drafted by Portland with the 41st overall pick of the 1977 NBA Draft, spending his first three NBA campaigns with the Trail Blazers.

R.J. Adelman, who was a four-year letterman in basketball at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, earned his law degree from the University of Oregon in 2001.

Pat Zipfel joined Houston after serving three seasons as an advance scout with Portland.

Rockets guard Aaron Brooks was an All-Pac-10 standout at the University of Oregon.

Guard Steve Francis, who returned to the Rockets after having his contract bought out by Portland, was part of a multi-player deal that sent Zach Randolph from the Trail Blazers to the Knicks on June 28, 2007.

In nearly six seasons with Portland, Rockets guard/forward Bonzi Wells posted averages of 13.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 310 games with the Trail Blazers.

Portland center Joel Przybilla was selected by Houston in the first round (9th overall) of the 2000 NBA Draft before Milwaukee acquired his draft rights.

Steve Francis to have season-ending right knee surgery

Rockets guard Steve Francis will undergo season-ending surgery in order to repair a torn quadriceps tendon in his right knee.  Francis has been sidelined with the injury since 12/19/07.  The surgery will be performed during the week of 2/25 by Dr. Walter Lowe.

After battling through increasing knee discomfort in mid-December, Francis immediately began a rehabilitation program focused on reducing the pain in the joint.  An MRI performed on 1/3/08 at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center revealed additional damage.  The decision to proceed with a surgical repair of the tendon was reached after consulting with a variety of medical specialists that include: Rockets Team Physician Tom Clanton, Dr. Richard Steadman and Dr. Ben Shaffer.

Rockets-Sonics team connections

Rockets Assistant Coach Jack Sikma joined Houston after spending four seasons on the Seattle coaching staff … Sikma, who was selected by the Sonics with the eighth overall pick of the 1977 NBA Draft, had his jersey #43 retired by Seattle during a halftime ceremony of a Sonics vs. Detroit Pistons game on Nov. 21, 1992 … Houston Assistant Coach R.J. Adelman worked as an NBA advance scout for the Sonics before coming to Houston … Rockets guard Aaron Brook is a native of Seattle, leading Franklin High School to the Washington 4A State Championship as a senior … originally chosen by the Sonics in the second round (31st overall) of the 2007 NBA Draft, Houston obtained the draft rights to forward Carl Landry from Seattle on June 28, 2007 … Scott Brooks, an assistant coach with the Sonics, played three seasons with the Rockets (1992-95) … Seattle Assistant Coach Mark Bryant also played one season with Houston (1995-96).

Rockets notes

Yao Ming finished with 30 points (12-19 FG), 17 boards and three blocked shots vs. Seattle (1/21/08). Overall, it marked Yao’s seventh 30-point outing of the season and his fourth 30-13 game (points-rebounds) of 2007-08: 30 points, 15 boards vs. Dallas (11/21/07); 31 points, 13 rebounds at Phoenix (11/28/07) and 30 points, 16 rebounds vs. New Orleans (1/13/08)… Houston reached the 41-game mark with a record of 22-19 after a 96-89 win vs. Seattle (1/21/08), moving the Rockets to 14-1 this season when holding an opponent to less than 90 points. The Rockets now enter the second half of the season as winners of seven of their last nine games. Houston also holds an active run of three consecutive wins away from Toyota Center (1/4/08-1/9/08), which stands as its best road winning streak of the season.

Rockets rookie watch

Aaron Brooks, who posted a career-high 22 points (8-10 FG, 4-5 3FG) vs. New York (1/5/08), has all four of his double-figure scoring games over his last 11 outings. Luis Scola has made 50-of-90 (.556) field goals for 115 points (11.5 ppg) over the past 10 contests, including a career-best 22 points at Memphis (12/28/07), 19 points at New York (1/9/08) and equaling his career-high 22 points vs. Minnesota (1/11/08).

McGrady out 3+ more games

The AP reports: Houston Rockets guard Tracy McGrady is expected to miss three more games as he recovers from a left knee injury. McGrady, averaging 23 points and five assists per game, has sat out the last eight games with strained tendons, tendinitis and a bone bruise in the knee. The Rockets are 6-2 in the stretch without him heading into Friday night’s game against Minnesota.

The Story Behind Isiah’s Ejection

Yao Ming had tortured the Knicks last night. In more ways than one. It wasn’t just the 36 points. It was the five dunks and four lay-ins, and the way he would linger in the paint on the offensive end. All of it was too much for Isiah Thomas to take.

The Knick coach had complained to the officials that Yao should’ve been called on a number of three-second violations, but to no avail. Danny Crawford hit him with a ‘T”, then wasted no time in tossing him.

Afterward, a much more subdued Thomas explained his stance, after getting bounced 41 seconds into the fourth quarter, with the Rockets ahead 77-74.

“In the second quarter,” recounted Thomas, “I spoke with [Crawford] and asked if they could watch Yao in the lane. I also said that, if you are not going to call [a violation], would I need to get a technical foul to bring your attention to it?

“I wasn’t trying to get ejected. But, I was trying to get a technical, because I did want to bring it to [the officials’] attention.

“I was close enough to [Crawford’s] ear that he could hear me. I didn’t bump him, or anything like that. You can look at my reaction two ways –I could have been given a tech, or be thrown out of the game. I have shown, that I am not a guy who complains a lot. I just needed to make a point, because there was no way that we could guard Yao in the lane that long.”

Thomas paused briefly.

“Even out of the lane,” he joked, “we couldn’t guard him.”

Subsequently, Yao converted the ensuing free throw, fueling the Rockets’ 78-74 advantage, and the Knicks were effectively beaten after that.

McGrady injury update: Out 7-10 days

Statement from Dr. Tom Clanton: “Rockets guard/forward Tracy McGrady underwent further examination and a second MRI at the Roger Clemens Institute at Memorial Hermann, which revealed a strained popliteus tendon in his left knee. This is in addition to his patellar tendinitis and bruised bone that had been diagnosed previously and were confirmed by the first MRI. McGrady is expected to miss between 7-10 days as he continues his current rehabilitation program.”
