Andrew Bogut set to return Tuesday

Charles F. Gardner of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports (via blog):

Andrew Bogut set to return Tuesday

Andrew Bogut will return to the Bradley Center court on Tuesday night for the first time since he suffered a season-ending injury on April 3 against Phoenix.

Bucks coach Scott Skiles said he anticipated Bogut would play in the 20-minute range as Milwaukee meets the Chicago Bulls in the pre-season opener for both teams.

“I’ll try to get him over 20 minutes for sure, maybe half the game,” Skiles said after the Bucks practice session Monday at the Cousins Center. “We’ll see how the game’s going, how he’s feeling. More than likely we won’t play him 30 minutes, that’s for sure.”

Bogut had his right hand taped but participated in the Bucks’ contact practice on Monday.

Drew Gooden says big Bucks contract was deserved

Charles F. Gardner of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports:

March 30, 2010 Milwaukee, WI. Bradley Center..Los Angeles Clipper Drew Gooden had a double-double scoring 20 points and 11 rebounds against the Bucks..Milwaukee Bucks won over Los Angeles Clippers 107-89. Mike McGinnis/CSM.

Some observers around the NBA thought the Bucks overpaid for the 6-foot-10, 250-pound Gooden, and he took notice.

“I felt I had to go to hell and back to get what I deserved and I worked hard,” Gooden said. “I did everything I was supposed to.

“I heard, ‘He got overpaid.’ But a lot of guys I talked to were like, ‘He deserved that,’ so I’ll take that.

“They don’t know what I’ve been through. My career numbers are just as good as some of those guys who got 80 (million) this year.”

Gooden spent the first half of last season in Dallas and contributed primarily at the center position while playing with all-star power forward Dirk Nowitzki.

But he was traded to Washington at the February deadline as the Mavericks picked up center Brendan Haywood and forward Caron Butler. Gooden never played for the Wizards but was released in a cost-cutting move and ended the season with the Los Angeles Clippers.

“I had to reinvent my game, and I have to credit Coach Carlisle,” Gooden said of Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle. “I had to learn how to be a guy to come off the bench and give you 18 or 20 minutes and be a force defensively rather than offensively.

Bucks sign Brian Skinner

Bucks sign Brian Skinner

The Milwaukee Bucks have signed forward-center Brian Skinner (6-9, 255) to a contract, General Manager John Hammond announced today.

A 12-year NBA veteran, Skinner has played in 605 games and holds career averages of 4.8 points and 4.7 rebounds while shooting 49.4 percent from the field. Skinner spent the 2009-10 season with the Los Angeles Clippers, where he played in 16 games and tallied 1.6 points and 1.7 rebounds in 7.7 minutes per contest.

A Temple, TX native, Skinner was selected by the Clippers with the 22nd overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft, and spent the first three years of his career in Los Angeles.  A trade to the Chicago Bulls in July 2001 marked the beginning of a nine-year stretch in which Skinner played for eight different teams, including two seasons (2003-04 and 2006-07) with Milwaukee. He enjoyed his best statistical season in 2003-04 when he averaged 10.5 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.1 blocks in 56 games as a Buck.

The Milwaukee Bucks Training Camp roster now stands at 20 players.

Bucks hire Anthony Goldwire as assistant coach

General manager John Hammond announced today that the Bucks have added Anthony Goldwire as an assistant coach to the 2010-11 Milwaukee Bucks coaching staff. Goldwire, who has playing experience in the NBA, CBA and internationally, most recently served as an assistant coach for the 2010 Phoenix Suns Summer League team. Goldwire joins Jim Boylan, Kelvin Sampson, Joe Wolf and Bill Peterson on the coaching staff of Head Coach Scott Skiles.

From 1995-2005, Goldwire spent eight seasons with nine NBA teams, including two stints with Milwaukee in the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons, respectively. In 24 games during the 2004-05 season, Goldwire averaged 6.4 points, 2.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game for the Bucks. In 266 career NBA games, Goldwire averaged 6.3 points, 2.8 assists and 1.3 rebounds.

A native of West Palm Beach, Florida, Goldwire played at the University of Houston and was selected by the Phoenix Suns in the second round (52nd overall pick) of the 1994 NBA Draft. He began his professional career with the Yakima Sun Kings of the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), where he earned Second Team All-Rookie honors in 1995 while leading the Sun Kings to a CBA Championship. In 2006 he won another CBA Championship with Yakima and was named the League and Finals MVP.

Goldwire spent several seasons playing basketball overseas, most recently with CB Sant Josep Girona of Catalonia, Spain in 2009. He replaces Adrian Griffin, who took a coaching position with the Chicago Bulls.

Bucks popularity is on the rise

Don Walker of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports:

The Bucks were so happy with last year’s marketing slogan – Work Hard Play Hard – they’ve embraced it again this year.

That, and Fear the Deer.

So far in the selling season, the numbers look good, according to John Steinmiller, vice president for business operations, and Jim Grayson, the team’s director of sales.

Both say the season-ticket renewal rate for current season-ticket holders is near 90%, which is the league’s benchmark rate.

Even better, Steinmiller said the franchise is close to selling 2,000 new, full-season equivalent packages. That is the biggest jump in new sales since the Bucks reached the National Basketball Association Conference Finals in the 2000-’01 season.

Bucks got deeper this summer

Charles F. Gardner of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports:

The Bucks should have a much deeper team than the one they finished with last season, when coach Scott Skiles had to use Primoz Brezec for important minutes at the center spot in Game 7 of the playoffs against Atlanta (with Bogut injured and backup Kurt Thomas in foul trouble).

“No disrespect to our guys on the bench, but we didn’t really have guys we could rely on coming off the bench,” Bogut said. “Kurt when he was backing me up was a great backup, and we had a couple guys.

“But this year there are questions for us. Does Maggette come off the bench for us or does he start?

“Coach is going to have his work cut out for him figuring out rotations. We genuinely have 10 or 11 guys who can play and on an NBA team you can’t play that many guys. You’ve got to narrow it down to eight or nine guys and the rest pick up feeder minutes. Coach has a tough deal on his plate.”

Corey Maggette still healing

Charles F. Gardner of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports:

Corey Maggette still healing

Bucks coach Scott Skiles said at the team’s annual golf outing Monday that Bogut will be ready for the start of training camp in one week.

But Maggette, who underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left ankle during the off-season, will be brought along slowly at the start of camp.

“He’s not quite ready yet,” Skiles said of Maggette, whom the Bucks acquired in a trade with the Golden State Warriors. “He’s made great progress, but our camp is tough.

“We don’t want that to be his first action. We’ll ease him into it a little bit. We have the non-contact practices and we’ll have some days throughout October where we won’t go as hard based on our schedule. The first week of camp can be a shock to anybody’s system.

Jon Brockman gets his own burger

Paul Imig, special to OnMilwaukee.com, reports:

Jon Brockman gets his own burger

It didn’t take long for Jon Brockman to make his mark in Milwaukee, and that was two weeks before even beginning his first training camp with the Bucks.

Brockman and AJ Bombers teamed up to create the Brockness Burger, with Milwaukee’s recently acquired power forward donating $10 to Special Olympics Wisconsin for every one of his signature burgers sold over the next week.

Despite moving to Milwaukee less than four weeks ago and still living out of a hotel, Brockman said he wanted to find a way to quickly become a part of the local community.

“The more stuff like this you do, it makes it more real and more fun,” Brockman said. “I knew I wanted to get plugged into something and be a part of something here in Milwaukee. I just decided to give this a try.”

Bucks sign second round pick Tiny Gallon

The Milwaukee Bucks have signed Tiny Gallon to a contract, General Manager John Hammond announced today. Gallon (6-9, 290) was the 47th overall selection in the 2010 NBA Draft.
