Lopez leads Nets past fading 76ers

The AP reports: Vince Carter was out, a sprained ankle forcing him to New Jersey’s bench. What he saw was one grim collapse for the 76ers and an improbable win for the resilient Nets. Brook Lopez had 24 points and 17 rebounds and his two-handed dunk with 16.8 seconds left gave New Jersey the lead and helped the Nets take advantage of Philadelphia’s fourth-quarter meltdown to stun the 76ers 85-83 on Saturday night… Devin Harris scored 17 points and the Nets won for only the second time in 10 games… Andre Miller finished with 19 points and Andre Iguodala had 18.

Johnson, Bibby lead Hawks past Nets, 105-88

The AP reports: Joe Johnson found his shot, and the Atlanta Hawks found a way to beat the New Jersey Nets. Johnson scored 29 points to shake his January slump as the Hawks won the matchup of high-scoring backcourts and beat the Nets 105-88 on Friday night. Johnson’s backcourt-mate Mike Bibby added 20 points as Atlanta won against New Jersey for the first time in four tries this season… New Jersey’s Devin Harris and Vince Carter form the top-scoring backcourt in the league with their combined average of 43.1 points, about six points better than the third-place Hawks’ combo. But Harris (20 points) and Carter (18) combined to make only 11 of 31 shots against Atlanta.

Chris Douglas-Roberts reminded of his place

Chris Douglas-Roberts is a rookie guard on the New Jersey Nets. And just because his shoulders look like they were put on backwards doesn’t mean he doesn’t deserve respect.

Still, rookies have to know their place. Especially those who will have to keep working hard to prove they belong in the league.

The New York Daily News (Julian Garcia) reports:

Rookie guard Chris Douglas-Roberts was knocked down a peg by assistant coach Doug Overton Thursday. During a drill that only a few players were participating in, Overton screamed, “Shut the — up. You’re a rookie!” Douglas-Roberts then stood with his shirt pulled up over his face while he waited to get back on the court. He looked to be on the verge of tears as he returned to the locker room after practice ended.

That’s tough love, folks.

Calderon big as Raptors beat Nets

The AP reports: With Jose Calderon back in the lineup, the Toronto Raptors are hoping the second half of the season is a lot better than the first. Calderon had 17 points and 11 assists and the Raptors escaped with a 107-106 victory over New Jersey on Wednesday night after Nets point guard Devin Harris missed a wide-open 16-foot jumper at the buzzer… Anthony Parker added 21 points, and Chris Bosh had 18 for the Raptors, who shot almost 56 percent and had six players in double figures. Andrea Bargnani had his streak of 15 straight games of at least 15 points stopped, scoring eight. Vince Carter had 27 points to lead the Nets, who rallied in the final minutes by hitting four of their 15 3-pointers. Harris added 25 points and 10 assists, but he missed the biggest shot of the night after Calderon had left the door open by missing a jumper with about 21 seconds to play.

Thunder beat Nets 94-85

The AP reports: Kevin Durant scored nine of his 18 points in the decisive third quarter, and the Thunder enjoyed big advantages at the free throw line and on the boards to beat the New Jersey Nets 94-85 Monday night in front of just 5,000 fans. Russell Westbrook had 13 points and eight rebounds, and Jeff Green scored 13 for the Thunder. Oklahoma City took 38 free throws, 20 more than the Nets, and outrebounded the opponent for the eighth time in nine games… Rookie Brook Lopez, who had a career-high 31 points in the first meeting, scored 18 for the Nets. Carter, averaging 21.6 points per game, had just eight on 2-of-12 shooting. Devin Harris (21.8) scored 10 and was 4-of-17.

Weather won`t stop Nets at Thunder game

The following statement is from Dan Mahoney, Oklahoma City Thunder Vice President of Corporate Communications regarding the Oklahoma City weather conditions:

“Tonight’s game between the Thunder and the New Jersey Nets will be played as scheduled at the Ford Center. The visiting team and the officials have arrived, so the game will be played.

“The Thunder urges fans to be safe, use extreme caution and allow extra driving time when coming to the game.”

Nets snap 5-game losing skid, beat Grizzlies

The AP reports: New Jersey refused to let its skid continue for one more day. One night after falling 94-91 at San Antonio, Vince Carter scored 23 points and Devin Harris added 17 points and eight assists as the Nets snapped a five-game skid with a 99-88 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night… For Memphis, their woes continued. O.J. Mayo scored 23 points to lead the Grizzlies, playing their second game under interim coach Johnny Davis, who took over when Marc Iavaroni was fired Thursday… Memphis didn’t get a player in double figures until Mayo’s 3-pointer with 7:21 to go in the third period. A short time later, Brook Lopez scored on a dunk, extending the Nets’ lead to double-digits again.

Duncan’s 30 leads Spurs over Nets

The AP reports: The slumping Nets scraped and matched San Antonio nearly shot-for-shot throughout a tense fourth quarter, but Duncan scored six of his 30 points down the stretch and Michael Finley sank a backbreaking 3-pointer with 22.6 seconds left to lift the Spurs to a 94-91 win on Friday night. Duncan also grabbed 15 boards—his 28th double-double this season—in carrying San Antonio to its fourth straight win heading into a three-game road swing out West that will be its toughest so far… Devin Harris scored 27 and Vince Carter had 26 for the Nets, who left the court flustered with how their fifth straight loss ended.

Nets recall Sean Williams from D-League

The New Jersey Nets have recalled second year center Sean Williams from the team’s D-League affiliate, the Colorado 14ers, Nets President Rod Thorn announced today.

Hornets defeat Nets, 102-92

The AP reports: Another dominant performance by Chris Paul made the absence of two starters seem like only a minor inconvenience for the New Orleans Hornets. Paul narrowly missed his fifth triple-double of the season with 29 points, nine rebounds and eight assists, and New Orleans beat the New Jersey Nets 102-92 on Wednesday night… Vince Carter scored 20 points for New Jersey but the Nets lost their fourth straight, unable to take advantage of the absence of Hornets starters Tyson Chandler (left ankle) and David West (back spasms). New Orleans also was without Chandler’s primary backup, Hilton Armstrong (left knee). Peja Stojakovic had 20 points and 10 rebounds. Adjusting his perimeter game to make up for the Hornets’ lack of size, Stojakovic sneaked inside to grab double-digit rebounds for the first time all season and New Orleans wound up outrebounding New Jersey 42-37.
