2011 Knicks Legends Night is February 23

Marc Berman of the New York Post reports:

The Knicks will hold their annual Legends Night Feb. 23 vs. Milwaukee and unveil the player of the past decade, with fans eligible to vote. Two years ago, Legends Night featured winners of the past five decades but left open the 2000’s — an atrocious period in Knick history.

On the ballot for this past decade is current assistant general manager Allan Houston, Latrell Sprewell, Marcus Camby, David Lee and Kurt Thomas. Houston is a strong favorite to win, but Sprewell could take the fan vote. The Knicks are assembling a panel to vote and the online fan vote counts as one panel member.

Fans can also select a second player of the decade from the 1950’s, 1960’s, 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s and they, too will be honored. In 2009, the inaugural class of decade winners were: Carl Braun (1940’s), Richie Guerin (1950’s), Willis Reed (1960’s), Walt Frazier (1970’s), Bernard King (1980’s) and Patrick Ewing (1990’s).

Rumor: Danilo Gallinari is dating Michelle Trachtenberg

Page Six, from the New York Post, reports:

The Knicks’ “Italian Stallion,” Danilo Gallinari, has a new love interest — “Gossip Girl” star Michelle Trachtenberg. The NBA heartthrob and the beauty have been spending time together in some of the city’s hottest clubs over the last few weeks. Sources tell us of the 22-year-old, 6-foot-10 “Gallo” and Trachtenberg: “They are seeing each other, but it is very early days. Michelle seems pretty excited about Danilo and was overheard talking about him at the Knicks game recently, saying she really likes him.”

InsideHoops.com editor says: The other female stars of Gossip Girl want me. They just don’t know it yet. But they will. Oh yes.

Marc Berman of the New York Post reports:

The Knicks were 3-13 after 16 games last season on the way to their ninth straight losing season. They hadn’t won four straight road games since 2001. And at 8-8, they are half-game behind the Miami’s Dream Team (8-7). Crazy.

“The difference [from last season] is everybody cares,” said Wilson Chandler, who had a wonderful 21-point night in which he bagged 4 of 5 3-pointers. “Losing for so long, it was like the norm. This year everybody wants to win.”

This year they have Amar’e Stoudemire and Raymond Felton, playing like studs now.

“I’m not going to sit here and single me and Amar’e out as the reason we’re winning,” Felton said. “Gallo’s been great, Will’s been great, Landry (Fields) and Ronny’s been great. Me and Amar’e have been playing great but so many other guys are contributing. You can’t win with just two guys.”

Bill Walker and Shawne Williams fight at practice

Marc Berman of the New York Post reports:

Bill Walker and Shawne Williams fight at practice

Toughness has not been a Knicks trait in years. Yesterday, the Knicks, after breaking their six-game losing streak in Sacramento, were feeling feisty at practice as a skirmish broke out between Bill Walker and Shawne Williams.

Williams was driving to the basket when Walker took him down hard. Williams, who has yet to play this season after making the team as 15th man, shot up from the floor and lunged at Walker, shouting at him about the dirty play. Teammates separated the two players, but Williams kept carrying on, trying to break free to get at Walker. Even Eddy Curry had to restrain the ranting Williams.

It was a bizarre scene the way Williams carried on.

Danilo Gallinari declares himself a non-superstar

New York Knicks forward Danilo Gallinaro last season, and for bits of this short season, has shown off incredible outside shooting ability. The rest of his game is still in development, however.

Still, when hot, he can toss in 25 pretty easily if in rhythm and fed the ball while in proper outside position.

But he seems to want to make sure everyone knows that he’s not someone who is going to take over the league anytime soon.

Howard Beck of the New York Times reports:

Danilo Gallinari declares himself a non-superstar

After six breakthrough quarters, in which he looked very much like a potential star, the 22-year-old Gallinari swiftly punctured the notion of his stardom.

“I know you expect a lot from me, and people expect a lot from me,” Gallinari said late Wednesday night, “but I’m not a superstar, I’m not an All-Star, I’m not LeBron, I’m not those great players. I’m an important player of the Knicks. And that’s what I’m trying to do, to help the team every time. Sometimes, can be these type of games, sometimes not. But as long as we win, it’s all good.”

It was a surprising response, and entirely unsolicited. Gallinari had just posted consecutive 20-point games for the first time this season — 21 in Denver and a season-high 27 in Sacramento — and was simply asked if he needed a performance like this for his confidence.

He could have nodded and offered perfunctory agreement. Instead, he took the question as an opportunity to push back against the outsize expectations that have been thrust upon him since June 2008. Coach Mike D’Antoni once called Gallinari the best shooter he had ever seen. Amar’e Stoudemire has compared Gallinari to Dirk Nowitzki, a perennial All-Star. Nowitzki himself made the comparison last spring, and said that Gallinari was better than he was at the same age.

Remember, English is not Gallinari’s first language. He’s good at it, but still, best not to take things too literally. He’s basically just saying what people know, that he isn’t the next LeBron or Kobe. But hopefully it’s OK for Knick fans to still hope that over the next year or two he emerges into an occasional Dirk Nowitzki.

Knicks president Donnie Walsh has hip surgery

Howard Beck of the New York Times reports:

Donnie Walsh, the Knicks’ team president, had surgery to repair his right hip Tuesday morning and is expected to spend a few days in the hospital before starting a rehabilitation program at home.

The Knicks did not provide a timetable for Walsh’s return, but he said last week that he planned to work from his Manhattan apartment during his recovery, which he figured would last about two weeks.

Glen Grunwald, the Knicks’ senior vice president for basketball operations, is with the team this week for its four-game trip through the Western Conference.

Suns sign Earl Barron

Suns sign Earl Barron

The Phoenix Suns have signed center Earl Barron, the team announced today.  Barron will be available on the club’s four-game road trip that begins Wednesday in Miami.

The 7-0, 250-pound center is a four-year NBA veteran joining his third team after successful stints with the Miami Heat (2005-08) and New York Knicks (2009-10). Most recently, Barron averaged 11.7 points, 11.0 rebounds and 33.1 minutes in seven games (six starts) for the Knicks last season.  The 29-year-old tallied four double-digit rebounding efforts, two double-doubles and led New York in rebounding four times in that seven-game stint.  Barron’s time with the Heat saw him average 4.9 points and 3.0 rebounds in 82 games (15 starts) over a three-season span.

The University of Memphis product owns career averages of 5.5 points and 3.7 rebounds in 89 games (21 starts).  In 2009-10, before joining the Knicks, Barron was an NBA Development League All-Star after averaging 16.2 points and 10.2 rebounds, fourth-most in the D-League, in 37 games with the Iowa Energy, the Suns’ affiliate.

The Suns’ roster now stands at 14.

Amare stoudemire wants urgency from Knicks

The New York Knicks are struggling. And while Amar’e Stoudemire is playing fairly well, he hasn’t been at at the top of his game, and his teammates aren’t providing much support.

Although the final score in Sunday’s Knicks loss at home to the Houston Rockets was a close-sounding 104-96, the visitors steadily pulled away in the second half and weren’t threatened.

Marc Berman of the New York Post reports:

amare_stoudemire

The Knicks shockingly were blown out by the Rockets, 104-96, last night to drop their fifth straight game to fall to 3-7 at the boo-filled Garden, with the West Coast beckoning and Stoudemire finally going off on a rant on his teammates.

Amar’e, you’re not in Phoenix anymore.

“I don’t understand why we’re not playing with the urgency,” Stoudemire said. “I’m not used to that. We’re not playing like we’re on a four-game losing streak, now five. It almost seems as if it doesn’t matter.” …

“I’m talking to them constantly,” Stoudemire said. “Maybe I’m talking too much. I’m not accustomed to it. We have to do a much better job out there. It’s not fun. I know we are a young team, but we can’t keep doing the exact same thing.”

The Knicks now hit the road, beginning with the Denver Nuggets. Sounds like another loss for New York.

Kevin Love gets 31 points, 31 rebounds in Wolves win over Knicks

The AP reports:

kevin love

Kevin Love grabbed a franchise-record 31 rebounds and scored 31 points, the NBA’s first 30-30 game in 28 years, and the Minnesota Timberwolves rallied from a 21-point third-quarter deficit to stun the New York Knicks 112-103 on Friday night.

“I just got a good mindset that every single one was mine,” said Love, who had 23 points and 24 rebounds in a loss to the Lakers on Tuesday.

Love grabbed 15 boards in the third quarter alone to will the Timberwolves to victory. Moses Malone was the last player to do it with 38 points and 32 rebounds for Houston against Seattle in 1982.

“It seemed like no matter what anybody did I was going to go and get those rebounds. I don’t know what to tell you,” Love said sheepishly. “I impressed myself. I don’t even know what to say to be honest with you.”

Beasley had 35 points and six rebounds for the Wolves, who were carried to their second victory in a row by the two players who are being advertised as the building blocks of the latest rebuilding project.

InsideHoops.com editor says: What an amazing performance by Love. Who does he think he is, Moses Malone? Thanks to Kevin, I’m going out of my way to watch the next few Wolves games, and I’m sure tons of others will, too.
