Magic sign rookie Jonathan Isaac

The Orlando Magic have signed rookie forward Jonathan Isaac to his NBA rookie contract, President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman announced today.

Isaac (6’10”, 210, 10/3/97) was selected in the first round (sixth overall) of NBA Draft 2017. He played and started in 32 games last season (2016-17) as a freshman at Florida State University, averaging 12.0 ppg., 7.8 rpg., 1.2 apg., 1.53 blkpg. and 1.16 stlpg. in 26.2 minpg., while shooting .508 (130-256) from the floor, .348 (31-89) from three-point range and .780 (92-118) from the free throw line.

Isaac led the Seminoles in rebounding and blocked shots, while finishing second in scoring and steals. He was named to the All-ACC Freshman Team and earned All-ACC Honorable Mention honors. Isaac’s 7.8 rebounds per game set a school record for a freshman and were the most among all freshmen in the ACC in 2016-17. He was named the ACC Rookie of the Week twice (Nov. 21, Jan. 23) and helped Florida State notch 26 wins, one shy of the school record, including 12 in conference play, which tied the school record for most ACC wins in a season.

In 2015-16, Isaac played for IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., averaging 17.6 ppg. and 10.0 rpg., while shooting .510 from the floor. He competed in the Jordan Brand All-American Game (eight points, six rebounds and one block in 18 minutes) and was also a member of the USA Basketball Junior National Select Team that faced the World Select Team at the Nike Hoop Summit (seven points and four rebounds). Isaac also attended the International School in Hollywood, Fla., for two seasons (2013-15). He averaged 29.5 ppg. and 9.0 rpg. in 2014-15.

Orlando Magic hire John Hammond as general manager

The Orlando Magic have named John Hammond general manager, President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman announced today.

Hammond brings more than 35 years of coaching and administrative experience to Orlando, including the last nine seasons (2008-17) as general manager of the Milwaukee Bucks. During Hammond’s 26 years in the NBA, his teams have made 15 postseason appearances. Weltman served as assistant general manager under Hammond for five seasons (2008-13) and also worked with him in Detroit (2007-08).

“John (Hammond) brings tremendous experience and is a great talent evaluator,” said Weltman. “He has experience in everything from day-to-day operations to player development. He built a great team in Milwaukee, and won a championship while in Detroit. We are very fortunate to have him as part of the Magic family.”

“We are very excited to join Jeff (Weltman) and be a part of the team in Orlando,” said Hammond. “The Magic are a first-class organization all the way around and we look forward to this tremendous opportunity. I want to thank the ownership in Milwaukee, Wes Edens, Marc Lasry and Jamie Dinan, for their support and I certainly wish them well.”

Hammond was named general manager of Milwaukee on April 11, 2008 and promptly generated an eight-win improvement in his first season and another 12 during his second, earning the 2009-10 NBA Executive of the Year Award.

Prior to joining the Bucks, Hammond spent seven seasons as vice president of basketball operations with the Detroit Pistons, where he was responsible for directing day-to-day operations of the basketball operations department, handling player personnel issues and assisting in roster development. During his time with Detroit, the Pistons were 330-158 (.676), reached the Eastern Conference Finals six consecutive times (2003-08), made two straight trips to the NBA Finals (2004-05) and captured the NBA World Championship in 2004. In addition to his time as vice president of basketball operations, Hammond also served as director of player personnel, scouting director and assistant coach in two stints with the Pistons.

Hammond began his NBA career in 1989 as an assistant coach and scout with the Minnesota Timberwolves. From there, he joined Larry Brown’s staff with the Los Angeles Clippers, where they advanced to the playoffs in 1992 and 1993. Hammond had a second stint with the Clippers in 2000-01, joining Alvin Gentry’s staff as lead assistant. That team saw a 16-game improvement and Hammond was noted as a key in developing first-year players Darius Miles, Keyon Dooling and Quentin Richardson.

Prior to his NBA career, Hammond spent six seasons at Southwest Missouri State, where he helped lead the school to three consecutive NCAA Tournament berths (1986-88) and a trip to the NIT in 1985. He also spent two seasons at Houston Baptist (1981-83), two seasons at Nebraska (1979-81) and three seasons at the high school level in Nebraska.

A native of Zion, Ill., Hammond graduated from Greenville College in Illinois, where he earned two letters in basketball and served as a student assistant coach.

STATEMENT FROM BUCKS OWNERSHIP ON JOHN HAMMOND

“John Hammond has been an incredible asset to the Bucks organization these last nine years and a true professional in every sense of the word. His keen eye for talent and relentless drive to build one of the finest teams in the league has helped the Bucks become a championship-caliber organization on and off the court. We wish John and his family nothing but the best in Orlando.

“We remain very excited about the prospects of our team and anticipate further announcements about the front office staff to be made in the near future.”

Orlando Magic sign Anthony Brown to 10-day contract

The Orlando Magic have signed guard-forward Anthony Brown to a 10-day contract, General Manager Rob Hennigan announced today. Brown becomes the 12th GATORADE Call-Up from the NBA Development League this season. He will wear #21 with the Magic.

Brown (6’7”, 211, 10/10/92) has played and started in 16 games this season with the Erie BayHawks of the NBA Development League, averaging 21.6 ppg., 5.1 rpg., 3.4 apg. and 1.00 stlpg. in 39.2 minpg., while shooting .472 (42-89) from three-point range. He also appeared in nine games this season with New Orleans, averaging 3.8 ppg. and 2.9 rpg. in 15.8 minpg. Brown was signed by the Pelicans on Nov. 21, then waived on Dec. 9.

Originally selected in the second round (34th overall) of the 2015 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, Brown has appeared in 38 career NBA games with the Lakers and New Orleans, averaging 3.9 ppg. and 2.5 rpg. in 19.5 minpg. He has also played in 23 career D-League games with Los Angeles and Erie, averaging 19.4 ppg., 4.7 rpg. and 2.9 apg. in 37.5 minpg., while shooting .419 (57-136) from three-point range.

Brown played collegiately at Stanford University from 2010-15 (medical redshirt in 2012-13). He appeared in 144 career games (106 starts) with the Cardinal, averaging 10.8 ppg., 4.8 rpg. and 1.6 apg. in 29.2 minpg., while shooting .403 (218-541) from three-point range. He was named the Pac-12 Comeback Player of the Year in 2013-14, helping Stanford reach the Sweet Sixteen during the NCAA Tournament.

The Orlando Magic and the Erie BayHawks are in the final year of a three-year single affiliation partnership. Orlando became the 16th NBA team to have a one-to-one affiliation with an NBA D-League team. The partnership, also referred to as a “hybrid affiliation,” allows an NBA team to control the NBA D-League team’s basketball operations, while the existing local ownership maintains primary responsibility for the team’s off-the-court business operations and community initiatives.

Magic waive Arinze Onuaku

The Orlando Magic yesterday (Friday) waived center Arinze Onuaku (ah-RIN-zay on-ooh-AH-koo), General Manager Rob Hennigan announced.

In addition, the Magic have recalled guard C.J. Wilcox from the Erie BayHawks of the NBA Development League.

Onuaku (6’9”, 255, 7/13/87) played in eight games this season with the Magic, averaging 0.5 ppg. in 3.5 minpg. He was originally signed as a free agent by Orlando on September 8.

Wilcox (6’5”, 195, 12/30/90) has played in 15 games this season with the Magic, averaging 0.9 ppg. in 5.0 minpg. This was his second assignment to Erie. Wilcox has appeared in four games (one start) with the BayHawks this season, averaging 12.5 ppg., 4.3 rpg., 2.0 apg. and 1.25 stlpg. in 25.3 minpg. He was previously assigned on December 15.

Orlando’s roster now stands at 14 players.

Jodie Meeks helping Magic so far

jodie meeks magic shooting well

Jodie Meeks made a major impact in his first few games back from foot surgery in mid-July.

The veteran shooting guard made 54.5 percent of his 3-point tries and averaged 11.7 points in games against the Philadelphia 76ers, Detroit Pistons and Washington Wizards.

It’s no coincidence that the Orlando Magic won all three games.

Meeks was especially efficient in the Magic’s 124-116 win over the Wizards on Tuesday. He scored 18 points in 16 minutes as he sank four of his five attempts from beyond the arc.

Orlando Sentinel

Quick Take: The Magic are 10-12 this season, which is tied for 10th best in the East. They’re being led this season by Evan Fournier (16.9 ppg), Serge Ibaka (14.5 ppg) and Nikola Vucevic (12.4 ppg, 11.3 rpg). Their offense has been a major struggle all season. So far, Meeks is helping.

Jodie Meeks makes debut for Magic

Jodie Meeks made his Orlando Magic debut Friday night, giving hope to an offense that ranked last in the NBA in points per possession and last in 3-point shooting percentage.

Coach Frank Vogel subbed Meeks into the Magic’s game against the Philadelphia 76ers at the Wells Fargo Center at the start of the second quarter.

Vogel expected to play Meeks for a four- or five-minute burst in each half. Meeks made his first shot attempt, a 3-pointer that put Orlando ahead 28-23.

Quick Take: The Magic are 7-12 this season through Thursday’s games. Their shooting has been horrible this season. Any help Meeks can provide in that department would be greatly appreciated.

Orlando Magic change starting lineup

Orlando Magic change starting lineup

Frank Vogel made wholesale changes to the Orlando Magic’s starting lineup before the team’s game Sunday night against the Milwaukee Bucks.

First, the team put Jeff Green on the inactive list because of a sore lower back.

Vogel then decided to start D.J. Augustin at point guard, Evan Fournier at shooting guard, Aaron Gordon at small forward, Serge Ibaka at power forward and Bismack Biyombo at center.

Augustin and Biyombo had not started a game this season. Gordon had started Orlando’s first eight games before Vogel moved him to the bench and replaced him with Green.

Orlando Sentinel

Quick Take: The Magic this season have been led in scoring by Evan Fournier (17.0 ppg, though just 42% FG), Serge Ibaka (14.1 ppg), Nikola Vucevic (11.8 ppg) and Elfrid Payton (10.7 ppg). As a team the Magic are shooting just 40.9% FG. They have the least effective offense in the NBA through Saturday’s games, but a very effective defense so far this season.

Magic sign Ramon Galloway

The Orlando Magic signed guard Ramon Galloway today. Though, he may not be around long, since preseason ends soon.

Galloway (6’3”, 180, 2/10/91) spent last season playing in Italy with both OpenJobMetis Varese of the SerieA League and Fulgor Omegna of the SerieA2 League. In 26 games (20 starts), he averaged 11.7 ppg., 4.2 rpg. and 3.0 apg. in 29.1 minpg. Galloway has also played professionally in Germany.

Galloway played collegiately with South Carolina (2009-11) and La Salle (2011-13). As a senior (2012-13), he averaged 17.2 ppg., 4.6 rpg. and 3.7 apg. in 33.3 minpg. in 34 games (32 starts). Galloway was named to the 2012-13 All-Atlantic 10 First Team and led La Salle to the Sweet Sixteen in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.

Aaron Gordon dealing with sore ankles

Super-athletic Aaron Gordon is one of the key young members of the Orlando Magic. Through three preseason games, Gordon is averaging 8.3 points and 6.7 rebounds in 26.7 minutes per game. He’s shooting just 31% FG, though it’s not worth paying too much attention to field goal percentage when we’re only talking about a few games worth of shots. Still, it’s been a  modest preseason for him. Here’s the Orlando Sentinel with the latest:

Aaron Gordon dealing with sore ankles

Magic SF Aaron Gordon is dealing with soreness in both ankles and sat out Tuesday night’s game against the Miami Heat at AmericanAirlines Arena.

Gordon, though, said he expected to play Thursday night against the New Orleans Pelicans at Amway Center, Orlando’s final preseason game of 2016-17.

Gordon severely sprained his left ankle weeks before training camp, but in compensating for that injury, he has experienced some soreness in the right one now, too.

Gordon said his left ankle was hurting “so I compensated on my right one. They’re just sore.”

Dawson (6’6”, 225, 2/1/93) appeared in two preseason outings with the Magic, averaging 3.0 ppg. and 2.0 rpg. in 6.6 minpg. Murphy (6’5”, 185, 3/6/90) played in two preseason contests with Orlando, averaging 2.5 ppg. in 6.6 minpg.
