Utah Jazz sign Rudy Gay and Hassan Whiteside

The Utah Jazz announced yesterday that the team has signed forward Rudy Gay and center Hassan Whiteside.

Gay (6-8, 240, Connecticut) saw action in 63 games (one start) in 2020-21 with the San Antonio Spurs, owning averages of 11.4 points, 4.8 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 21.6 minutes per contest.

“Rudy brings a valuable veteran presence to the Jazz which will only enhance our group as it continues to evolve,” said Jazz General Manager Justin Zanik. “He’s proven to be one of the most consistent players in the NBA over his 15-year career and we’re thrilled for him to join our club.”

Entering his 16th NBA season, he owns career averages of 16.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.2 steals with Memphis (2006-12), Sacramento (2013-17) and San Antonio (2018-21) in 1,009 games (778 starts) and became one of 26 players in NBA history to total over 16,000 career points, 5,000 rebounds and 1,000 steals through 1,000 NBA games played. With 16,903 career points, the Baltimore, Md. Native currently ranks 99th overall in NBA history.

Originally drafted with the eighth overall pick in the 2006 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets, Gay earned 2006-07 All-NBA Rookie First Team honors following his first professional season. He has also represented the USA Men’s National Team at the 2010 FIBA World Cup and 2014 FIBA World Cup, helping both squads to gold medals.

Whiteside (7-0, 265, Marshall) played in 36 games (four starts) with the Sacramento Kings during the 2020-21 season, averaging 8.1 points on 56.3 percent from the field, 6.0 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in 15.2 minutes per contest.

“Hassan is one of the more physically gifted players in the game today and has a vast amount of valuable professional basketball experience,” said Jazz General Manager Justin Zanik. “We’re excited to add someone with his skillset and feel he’s a great fit with our current roster.”

The Gastonia, N.C. native has played in nine NBA seasons with career averages of 13.3 points, 11.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in 446 games (324 starts) with Sacramento (2010-12 and 2020-21), Miami (2014-19) and Portland (2019-20). He was named to the 2015-16 All-NBA Defensive Second Team and has twice led the NBA in blocks (2015-16 and 2019-20), also leading the NBA in rebounds in 2016-17. Of the last 10 point-rebound-block triple-doubles in the league, Whiteside owns four of those performances.

Originally drafted by Sacramento with the 33rd overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft, he has additional professional experience, playing in the G League with the Reno Bighorns (2010-12), Sioux Falls SkyForce (2012-13 and 2014-15), Rio Grande Valley Vipers (2012-13) and Iowa Wolves (2014-15). He played for Amchit Club of the Lebanese Division A in 2012-13 and Al Moutahed Tripoli in 2013-14, where he averaged 20.6 points on 54.3 percent shooting, 14.8 rebounds and 4.1 blocks per contest.

Kings center Hassan Whiteside day-to-day with hip flexor strain

Sacramento Kings center Hassan Whiteside underwent an MRI in Sacramento on Monday afternoon which confirmed a left hip flexor strain.

Whiteside’s status is considered day-to-day.

Whiteside is averaging 6.4 points (.523 FG%, .500 FT%), 4.2 rebounds, 1.1 blocks, 0.6 assists, 0.2 steals, and 12.7 minutes per game through nine games (no starts) for the Kings during the 2020-21 season.

Kings sign center Hassan Whiteside

The Sacramento Kings have signed free agent center Hassan Whiteside.

According to the Sacramento Bee, “the Kings signed Whiteside to a one-year minimum deal, which is worth $2.32 million for a player with eight years of NBA service, sources said. Whiteside made $27 million with the Portland Trail Blazers last season in the final year of the four-year, $98.4 million deal he signed with the Miami Heat in 2016.”

Whiteside returns to Sacramento after being selected by the Kings with the 33rd overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft.

An eight-year NBA veteran, Whiteside has averaged 13.7 points (.582 FG%, .320 3pt%, .608 FT%), 11.7 rebounds, 0.7 assists, 0.6 steals and 26.7 minutes per game in 410 career contests (320 starts) with the Kings (2010-11 – 2011-12), Miami Heat (2014-15 – 2018-19) and Portland Trail Blazers (2019-20).

Last season for the Blazers, Whiteside tallied 15.5 points (.621 FG%, .571 3pt%, .686 FT%), 13.5 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 0.4 steals and 30.0 minutes per game in 67 games (61 starts). The 7-foot-0, 265-pound player out of Marshall led the NBA in blocks (196), blocks per game (2.9) and offensive rebounds (258), while ranking second in total rebounds (905) and double-doubles (51) in 2019-20.

More from the Bee: “Whiteside will add significant size, rebounding and shot-blocking ability to a team that has lacked rebounding and rim protection in recent years.”

Entering the 2020-21 season, Whiteside ranks first among active NBA players in career blocks per game (2.4) and stands at third in rebounds per game (11.7). As a member of the Heat, he led the NBA in rebounds per game (14.1) in 2016-17. Following the 2015-16 season, Whiteside was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team after leading the league in blocks (269) and blocks per game (3.7). In the postseason, Whiteside has garnered averages of 9.0 points (.611 FG%, 1-1 3pt, .577 FT%), 8.7 rebounds, 0.3 assists, 0.5 steals and 23.7 minutes per game in 20 playoff games (18 starts) with Miami and Portland.

Born in Gastonia, North Carolina, Whiteside was the 2010 Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year after averaging 13.1 points, 8.9 rebounds, and a Division I-leading 5.4 blocks per game in 34 contests for Marshall University. Whiteside also earned the following collegiate honors: AP Honorable Mention All-American, Sporting News Second Team freshman All-American, Second Team All-Conference USA, Conference USA All-Freshman Team and All-Defensive Team, plus Second Team NABC All-District 11.

Whiteside will wear No. 20 for the Kings.

Another huge game by Hassan Whiteside

Trail Blazers big-man Hassan Whiteside is doing big things lately. Here’s NBC Sports Northwest:

He had another monster game Saturday night, helping the Trail Blazers push past the Minnesota Timberwolves 113-106. And all Whiteside did was grab 22 rebounds, block seven shots and score 16 points. He is averaging 16 rebounds and four blocks over his last seven games and is coming off rebound games of 14, 23 and 17 prior to his 22 against the T-Wolves.

The Timberwolves were without star center Karl-Anthony Towns, which certainly made things easier for Whiteside – but still, a big performance is a big performance.

Hassan Whiteside enjoys high school jersey retirement

Hassan Whiteside was the guest of honor, but the Miami Heat center said it was the unexpected guests who made the retirement of his high-school jersey so special.

Whiteside’s No. 32 was retired Thursday at East Side High School in Newark, N.J., with teammates Goran Dragic, Bam Adebayo, James Johnson and coach Erik Spoelstra among those on hand.

“His face when he saw Coach Spo was ecstatic,” Johnson said.

The ceremony came on an off day for the team before Friday night’s game against the Brooklyn Nets at Barclays Center, the third stop on this five-game trip.

Miami Heat re-sign Hassan Whiteside

The Miami HEAT have re-signed center Hassan Whiteside. And the numbers are huge: the deal is reportedly a $98 million dollar contract over four years.

Whiteside, the NBA leading shot blocker, appeared in 73 games (43 starts) with the HEAT last season and averaged 14.2 points, 11.8 rebounds, 3.68 blocks and 29.1 minutes while shooting 60.6 percent from the field. He blocked an NBA-best 269 shots, 92 more than the next highest player in the league, and the second-most blocks during a single-season in HEAT history. He helped anchor Miami’s defense that averaged a franchise-best 6.48 blocks and team-best 531 rejections this season while giving up just 98.4 points per game to opponents, ranking as the third-least amount of points in the Eastern Conference and the fifth-least in the entire NBA. The HEAT finished in the top six for fewest points allowed for the seventh consecutive season, tying for the fifth-longest streak over the last 40 years. He led Miami in rebounds a team-high 55 times and grabbed double-figure rebounds a team-high 53 times, just three short of tying the single-season team record of 56 held by Rony Seikaly in 1991-92. He averaged 11.8 rebounds per game, the highest single-season rebound average in team history and grabbed his 1,000th rebound as a member of the HEAT on February 22, doing so in his 95th game, becoming the all-time quickest player in team history to reach the 1,000-rebound plateau. He posted a team-best 41 double-doubles, ranking tied for eighth-most in the NBA and a team-high three triple-doubles, ranking tied for sixth-most in the league. He recorded 22 five-plus block games, the second-most during a single-season in HEAT history and began the season blocking multiple shots in 21 consecutive games, the third-longest streak to start a season over the last 30 years, only Mark Eaton (1988-89) and Shaquille O’Neal (1992-93) had longer streaks.

Whiteside, who was selected to the NBA’s All-Defensive Second Team, became just the second player in NBA history to block at least 250 shots and shoot over 60 percent (.606) from the field, joining Kareem Abdul-Jabbar who accomplished the feat during the 1979-80 season and he also became just the third player over the last 20 years to post at least 1,000 points (1,040) and block at least 250 shots, joining Alonzo Mourning and Dikembe Mutombo. Additionally, his 9.7 block percentage was the highest in the NBA, no other player had a percentage higher than 6.1.

Center Hassan Whiteside played just 29.1 minutes per game for the Heat last season, yet averaged an extremely impressive 14.2 points, 11.8 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per outing, with 60.6% shooting. His free throw shooting is a struggle, but Whiteside was clearly in line for a big payday this summer. And he’s receiving it and will stick with Miami. Here’s the Palm Beach Post blog reporting:

Free-agent center Hassan Whiteside is re-signing with the Heat. The 27-year-old posted this message early Friday morning on The Players’ Tribune website.

There was considerable speculation that the 7-footer might be interested in leaving Miami to join the Dallas Mavericks or Los Angeles Lakers, and he met with both teams early Friday morning. But a source told the Associated Press that Whiteside will sign a four-year maximum deal worth approximately $98 million to remain with the Heat.

The Los Angeles Lakers plan to aggressively pursue Miami Heat center Hassan Whiteside when NBA free agency starts, according to league sources.

With rim protection and perimeter shooting ranking as the Lakers’ foremost areas of concern heading into the open market, sources told ESPN.com that Whiteside has emerged a priority target for L.A.

The Lakers, like the Heat, are still hopeful of securing a face-to-face recruiting meeting with Oklahoma City Thunder star Kevin Durant once free agency season commences at 12:01 a.m. on July 1. But the Lakers, sources say, are highly intrigued by Whiteside and what he could bring them as a double-double presence inside.

Whiteside’s defense remained the focal point around the team, even on a night when he finished with just one block and struggled at times in his matchup with Nets center Brook Lopez, who countered with a team-high 26 points on 12-of-20 shooting from the field but also had four turnovers. But it was Whiteside’s impact on the other side of the ball that more strongly resonated for the Heat (43-30), who have scored at least 100 points in 13 of their past 14 games and are 14-6 since the All-Star break.

A major component of Miami’s recent success has been Whiteside’s spike in production, which culminated Monday with the athletic 7-footer connecting on all seven of his shots from the field and scoring 15 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter. Most of Whiteside’s baskets came on lob dunks, of which he has totaled 10 in the past two games.

In his 18 games since the All-Star break, Whiteside is averaging 18 points, 13.7 rebounds and 3.4 blocks while shooting 60.5 percent from the field in 30.6 minutes — all off the bench. He started 40 games before he suffered a left hip injury in a Jan. 20 loss in Washington, but has since settled in as a reserve, although Whiteside often plays twice as many minutes as current starting center Amar’e Stoudemire.

Hassan Whiteside suspended for elbowing Boban Marjanovic

Miami Heat center Hassan Whiteside has been suspended one game without pay for throwing an elbow and making contact with the head of San Antonio Spurs center Boban Marjanovic, it was announced today by Kiki VanDeWeghe, Executive Vice President, Basketball Operations.

The incident, for which Whiteside was assessed a Flagrant 2 and ejected, occurred with 9:35 remaining in the fourth quarter of the Spurs’ 119-101 win over the Heat at AmericanAirlines Arena on Feb. 9.

Whiteside will serve his suspension when Miami plays the Atlanta Hawks on Feb. 19 at Philips Arena.
