Boston Celtics sign Joe Johnson to a 10-day contract

The Boston Celtics have signed seven-time NBA All Star and 17-year veteran Joe Johnson to a 10-day contract, the team announced today.

Johnson, 40, has played in 1,276 career NBA games over 17 seasons with the Celtics, Phoenix, Atlanta, Brooklyn, Miami, Utah, and Houston from 2001-02 to 2017-18, averaging 16.0 points on 44.1% shooting (37.1% 3-PT, 80.2% FT), 4.0 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 34.7 minutes. He produced double-digit scoring in 13 consecutive seasons from 2003-04 to 2015-16, five of which were 20+ point campaigns.

Originally selected by the Celtics with the 10th overall pick in the 2001 NBA Draft, Johnson rejoins Boston for the first time since his rookie season. The Little Rock, AR native recorded 6.3 points on 43.9% shooting in 48 games (33 starts) with the franchise in 2001-02.

Johnson will wear number 55.

Rockets sign Joe Johnson, waive Troy Williams

Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey announced today that the team has signed free agent guard/forward Joe Johnson for the remainder of the season. Johnson will wear #7 for the Rockets.

In a related move, the Rockets have waived Troy Williams.

Johnson (6-7, 240) was originally the 10th overall pick by Boston in the 2001 NBA Draft and is in his 17th NBA season. In 1,253 games with 1,090 starts, Johnson is averaging 16.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists. He is one of 12 players in NBA history with at least 1,000 games played to have averaged at least 16.0 ppg, 4.0 rpg and 4.0 apg and one of three (Kobe Bryant and John Havlicek) with over 1,200.

Among active players, Johnson ranks fourth in games played, second in minutes played (43,729; 20th all-time), eighth in scoring (20,266), and sixth in 3-pointers made (1,960; 10th all-time). He has also appeared in 112 playoff games with 97 starts, averaging 16.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists. Johnson has been to the playoffs in each of the past 10 seasons and advanced to the Conference Semifinals six times over that span.

Johnson appeared in 32 games with three starts for Utah this season. He saw action in 78 games for the Jazz in 2016-17, and averaged 1.4 3-pointers made on 41.1% shooting, marking the second-highest percentage of his career.

The seven-time All-Star is reunited with Rockets head coach Mike D’Antoni. In his final season playing for D’Antoni in Phoenix in 2004-05, Johnson averaged a career-high 2.2 3-pointers made on a career-best 47.8% shooting.

Kings waive Joe Johnson

The Sacramento Kings, who are undergoing a youth movement and are building for the future, not the present, waived veteran guard/forward Joe Johnson today.

Johnson appeared in 32 games this season for the Utah Jazz and averaged 7.3 points (.420 FG%, .274 3pt%, .833 FT%), 3.3 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 21.9 minutes per game. Over the course of his 16-year career, the seven-time NBA All-Star has accrued averages of 16.2 points (.442 FG%, .372 3pt%, .802 FT%), 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 34.9 minutes per game through 1253 games (1090 starts) with six teams; Boston, Phoenix, Atlanta, Brooklyn, Miami and Utah.

Utah Jazz sign Joe Johnson

The Utah Jazz have signed free-agent guard/forward Joe Johnson.

Johnson’s deal is reportedly a $22 million dollar contract over two years.

Johnson (6-7, 240, Arkansas) is a 15-year veteran and seven-time NBA All-Star who owns career averages of 16.9 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists while shooting .372 from three-point range in 36.0 minutes over 1,143 career games (1,073 starts) with Boston, Phoenix, Atlanta, Brooklyn and Miami. This past season with the Nets and Heat, he averaged 12.2 points and 3.6 rebounds per game. Johnson recorded 10 games of 20-plus points, three double-doubles and 13 games with three-or more three-point field goals made. Johnson has made the playoffs in 11 of his 15 seasons, appearing in 101 career playoff games (95 starts), averaging 16.6 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.

Originally selected in the first round (10th overall) of the 2001 NBA Draft by Boston, Johnson earned All-NBA Third Team honors in 2010 and was selected as an NBA All-Star from 2007-12 as well as in 2014. He has appeared in 79-plus regular season games in 10 different seasons, including all 82 games five times, and ranks ninth on the NBA’s all-time list for both three-pointers made (1,832) and attempted (4,928).

Prior to the NBA, Johnson played two seasons at the University of Arkansas from 1999-01. He averaged 15.0 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 30.3 minutes and was All-SEC Second Team selection by the conference coaches in 2001.

Born in Little Rock, Ark., Johnson played high school basketball at Little Rock Central and was named 1999 Arkansas Mr. Basketball following his senior season. He also won a bronze medal with Team USA at the FIBA World Cup 2006.

He will wear jersey #6 for the Jazz.

Joe Johnson will reportedly join Heat

Small forward Joe Johnson averaged just 11.8 points on 40.6% shooting this season for the Brooklyn Nets, plus 3.9 rebounds and 4.1 assists per outing. His career is winding down. Still, he’d make a terrific addition to just about any team that wants him as a member of the supporting cast. Here’s the Akron Beacon Journal reporting:

Six years later, the Cavaliers have reportedly lost out on another free agent to the Miami Heat. This one, however, doesn’t sting nearly as much.

Joe Johnson will join the Miami Heat after he clears waivers Saturday night, according to multiple reports. The soon-to-be free agent guard was considering the Cavs, but has chosen South Beach instead. Yahoo Sports reported Johnson chose the Heat for the chance to start and play meaningful minutes.

LeBron James, who also spurned Cleveland for Miami in 2010, confirmed earlier Friday the Cavs had interest in Johnson, but stopped short of saying he would reach out to him.

Will Nets bring Joe Johnson off bench?

Will the Brooklyn Nets bring veteran Joe Johnson off the bench next season?

Play-by-play man Ian Eagle, who is as plugged in on the Nets as anyone given that he’s been around the organization for several years, mentioned the possibility during his appearance on a YES Network podcast.

“I wouldn’t be shocked if he came off the bench this year,” Eagle said. “That would not shock me in the least bit.”

In that role, Johnson, 34, could anchor the second unit — coming in fresh against the opponent’s reserves — while still closing out games as the team’s go-to guy late in the fourth quarter.
