Vince Carter to wear Hawks jersey number formerly belonging to Al Horford
Here’s the Atlanta Journal Constitution reporting on new Hawk Vince Carter, whose jersey number will look familiar to any Hawks fans who enjoyed the work Al Horford did during his impressive stretch in Atlanta:
There is no No. 15 controversy for the Hawks.
Vince Carter will wear the uniform number after he signed a one-year contract with the team on Friday. The free-agent deal was agreed upon last month and the veteran is scheduled to play a record-tying 21st NBA season.
The number was last worn by Al Horford. The franchise staple spent nine seasons with the Hawks after he was the No. 3 overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft. The four-time all-star was allowed to leave for the Celtics in free agency in 2016 after helping the Hawks to the postseason each of his seasons in Atlanta, the first nine of the franchise’s 10-year run.
Many consider Horford a player deserving to have his number retired by the Hawks. Joe Johnson’s No. 2 or Horford’s No. 15 could be the next so honored.
Vince Carter turns 40 on Thursday

Grizzlies guard/forward Vince Carter is still going strong in his 19th NBA season as he prepares to celebrate his 40th birthday on Thursday, Jan. 26.
The NBA’s oldest active player remains a key contributor for a Memphis team that is pursuing its seventh consecutive playoff berth. Carter is averaging more points (8.2) and minutes (23.8) than he did in either of the previous two seasons. The last player to average eight points or more for a season when he was at least 40 years old at any point was Karl Malone in 2003-04 (13.2 ppg).
Carter is approaching two significant milestones as well. The eight-time All-Star (24,288 career points) needs 81 points to pass Hall of Famer Allen Iverson (24,368) for 23rd place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. Carter also needs four three-pointers to become the fifth player in NBA history with 2,000 for his career, joining Ray Allen, Reggie Miller, Milwaukee’s Jason Terry and the LA Clippers’ Paul Pierce.
It is fitting that Carter is close to cracking an exclusive shooting club alongside Terry and Pierce. Carter, Terry and Pierce are three of the six active players who were drafted in the 1990s, a group that also includes San Antonio’s Manu Ginobili, Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki and the Los Angeles Lakers’ Metta World Peace.

Vince Carter scores season-high 19 points vs Lakers
Friday in Los Angeles the Grizzlies beat the Lakers, 112-95. Memphis got a nice boost from Vince Carter off the bench: 7-of-10 shooting, including 5-of-7 three-pointers, for 19 points, three rebounds and two assists in around 19.5 minutes. Here’s the Memphis Commercial Appeal reporting:

Griz veteran Vince Carter manufactured a season-high 19 points mostly off of five 3-pointers. The long-range daggers were Carter’s first five field goal attempts over a span of nearly eight minutes.
“I was just locked in and trying to do anything I could for the team,” Carter said. “I don’t know if it makes me feel younger, but it just brings back good memories and shows that I can still do this. The guys are trying to find me, and that makes you feel good.”
The 18-year veteran is known for his dunking ability but gave new meaning to “Vinsanity.” At one point, Carter hit back-to-back shots from beyond the arc in just 28 seconds.
“I had him ready to sub out, and as (P.J. Hairston) was sitting there waiting for a dead ball, Vince made two more, which put him at five (3-pointers),” Joerger said. “But he was getting tired, he did a great job. What he does is he settles us. It was good for him to play with Mike Conley and a little bit of Lance (Stephenson). What I liked about what we did tonight, we can be chuckers at times, but the ball moved and that made for easier looks. Those are the kinds of shots where you might pass up an open guy when you see someone open, and all of a sudden he gets it and we’re moving the basketball. When they grab on to those things and realize this is how we can be successful, it can be good for us.”
Vince Carter suspended for elbowing Steven Adams

Dallas Mavericks guard-forward Vince Carter has been suspended one game without pay for throwing an elbow and making contact with the head of Oklahoma City Thunder center Steven Adams, it was announced today by Rod Thorn, President, Basketball Operations.
The incident, for which Carter was assessed a Flagrant Foul 2 and ejected, occurred with 4:01 remaining in the third quarter of Dallas’ 107-93 loss to the Thunder on Wednesday, Nov. 6, at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
Carter will serve his suspension tonight when the Mavericks visit the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Carter will provide instant offense and vastly underrated defense in his second consecutive season as the Mavs’ sixth man.
Coach Rick Carlisle wants to keep Carter’s minutes in the mid-20s per game again, putting a priority on keeping the 16-year veteran fresh throughout the season. Carter, who remains an outstanding one-on-one and pick-and-roll creator, will be the offensive focal point for the second unit. He can also be a floor-spacing complement with a five that features mostly starters, having knocked down 40.6 percent of his 3-pointers last season.
