Terrence Williams drops triple-double in first D-League game

April 07, 2010 Milwaukee, WI. Bradley Center..New Jersey Nets Terrence Williams brings the ball up the court, Williams had 6 points coming off the Nets bench..Milwaukee Bucks won over the New Jersey Nets 108-89. Mike McGinnis/CSM.

Everyone knows that New Jersey Nets swingman Terrence Williams is an NBA-level player. Averaging 6.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in a reserve role, T-Will showed bright flashes last season of what he can do when given bigger minutes.

But some off-court issues — reportedly, T-Will being off the court more than he should have been due to being late for practice on a regular basis, along with some other stuff — resulted in the team recently suspending him for two games, then sending him down to the D-League, probably as a wakeup call more than anything else.

Well, Williams made quite a statement in his first minor league action.

Colin Stephenson of the Newark Star-Ledger reports:

Terrence Williams posted a triple-double in his first game with the D-League’s Springfield Armor on Thursday. Williams had 16 points, 15 rebounds and 13 assists in a 116-112 win over the Maine Red Claws.

Nets general manager Billy King watched Williams, and Johnson said he would speak to King about his impressions of Williams this afternoon. However, Johnson said, he did like what he saw in the boxscore from Williams.

“I thought that was fantastic,” Johnson said of Williams. “He played 40 minutes (39:46); triple-double, I think it’s awesome.”

I would guess that the Nets keep T-Will there for perhaps a few more games. Maybe a week or so, then bring him back and hope things go smoothly from now on.

Nets launch Russian language website

NETS Basketball is giving Russian speaking fans the opportunity to further connect with the team by making its website viewable in Russian.

By logging on to www.netsrussia.com, viewers will have access to NETS related content translated into Russian, such as articles on the team, interviews with players, coaches and management, photographs, and ticket information. Soon there will be news about ‘An Evening of Russian Culture,’ which will be held during a NETS home game this season.

Since Mikhail Prokhorov’s majority purchase of the team in May, 2010, the NETS are receiving significant interest in Russia. During the team’s visit to Moscow in October, the players conducted a clinic before 3,000 youngsters at the CSKA arena, and several players appeared at an Adidas store to celebrate the opening of the first NETS merchandise shop in Russia.

“We’re excited that Russian-speaking fans will now have the chance to get closer to NETS Basketball in a comprehensive way,” NETS CEO Brett Yormark said. “While we strive to become Russia’s NBA home team, we are also gaining a large Russian fan-base in the metropolitan area, which can now fully experience the NETS.”

“I’m glad we’re reaching out to our global fan base in a personalized way,” said Mr. Prokhorov, the NETS’ principal owner.  “We want Russian speakers from New Jersey to New York to Moscow to see the NETS as their home team, and a Russian language website is an excellent way to further that goal.”

The Russian language website has been developed and is being maintained by Global Advertising Strategies, an interactive agency based in New York City.

“This launch signifies a continued evolution for the NETS online and further demonstrates the team’s commitment to communicate with Russian fans,” said Ryan Gordon, the Media Director of Global Advertising Strategies.

Nets sponsors now include PEAK, Zippo

The New Jersey Nets are great at landing sponsorships. Here are their latest deals:

NETS Basketball continues to globalize its franchise as it enters into new sponsorship alliances with PEAK, one of the leading China-based sports products companies, and Zippo, the internationally renowned maker of the famous Windproof Lighter.

In following the team’s participation in the NBA’s China Games in October, the NETS’ new sponsorship with PEAK demonstrates its sustainable business presence in China despite no longer having a Chinese player. PEAK, which is based in Quanzhou, Fujian Province, China, became the NETS’ first China-based partner in October 2008.

PEAK’s sponsorship agreement with the NETS includes television-visible courtside and baseline signage that can be seen during the NETS regular season home games that will be broadcast in China this season.

PEAK, which recently opened its U.S. office in Los Angeles, will also receive signage during NETS home games at the Prudential Center on both LED’s and the centerhung scoreboard.

Zippo sells its diverse product line in more than 160 countries, including Russia, the U.S., China, Japan, and India.  It will receive a variety of sponsorship entitlements during the 2010-11 NBA season such as: television-visible courtside signage during NETS home games; advertising time during local radio broadcasts of NETS games; and advertising on the NETS’ English and Russian official team websites.

“PEAK and Zippo are exciting international brands that align perfectly with our global objectives,” said NETS CEO Brett Yormark. “While we continue the globalization of the team, we also remain committed to serving as a marketing solution for international partners. As we form these alliances, it is clear that our message of providing value is resonating throughout the international business community.”

“We are excited to continue in a partnership with the NETS and realize the powerful benefits of building our business through NETS Basketball in the U.S.’s No. 1 media market,” said PEAK CEO Jim Xu.

“Aligning with the NETS gives us traction in two key markets in Russia and the United States,” said Zippo’s Global Marketing Director, David Warfel.  “Our strategy of product diversification and foreign market penetration can be realized through this partnership.  We can leverage our entitlements to promote our Outdoor Line in the U.S. and build awareness in Russia.”

The NETS extended their international reach in October when they announced a sponsorship alliance with Aeroflot, Russia’s leading air carrier and among Russia’s most recognized brands, and with Stolichnaya, a pioneer in the flavored vodka category. In addition to their pre-season games in China, the NETS visited Russia in October and will be playing in the NBA’s first-ever regular season games in Europe in March when they play twice against the Toronto Raptors in London.

Kings waive Antoine Wright

Kings waive Antoine Wright

The Sacramento Kings today announced that they waived guard Antoine Wright.

Wright totaled two points and three rebounds in seven appearances this season.

The Kings roster now stands at 13.

For his NBA career, which began with the New Jersey Nets in the 2005-06 season, Wright has averaged 5.4 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 19.2 minutes per game. He’s also played for the Dallas Mavericks and Toronto Raptors.

InsideHoops.com editor says: I think another team will sign Wright in the near future, likely for the league minimum. He certainly has lacked staying power, being bounced the league around like a pinball. But I think Wright is good enough to stick around.

Nets assign Terrence Williams to D-League

April 07, 2010 Milwaukee, WI. Bradley Center..New Jersey Nets Terrence Williams brings the ball up the court, Williams had 6 points coming off the Nets bench..Milwaukee Bucks won over the New Jersey Nets 108-89. Mike McGinnis/CSM.

The New Jersey Nets have assigned second year guard/forward Terrence Williams to their NBA Development League affiliate, The Springfield Armor, Nets General Manager Billy King announced today.

“After discussing the situation with Avery over the last several days, I feel the best course of action for Terrence and the team at this time is for him to play in the D-League,” said King.  “He is currently on the inactive list and this move will allow him to play until he is once again placed on the active list. There is no timetable on his return to the active list, and Terrence’s future status will be addressed at the appropriate time.”

Williams was selected 11th overall by New Jersey in the first round of the 2009 NBA Draft.  The Louisville product has appeared in 86 career games for the Nets, averaging 8.3 ppg, 4.4 rpg and 2.9 apg.  This season, Williams has played in eight contests, with averages of 6.8 ppg, 3.8 rpg and 3.0 apg.

Delonte West breaks right wrist

The AP reports:

Boston guard Delonte West left the Celtics’ game against the New Jersey Nets after breaking his right wrist.

West crashed to the ground after a layup with 2:48 left in the second quarter. He stayed there, grimacing in pain, until the medical staff came to help him. A few minutes later, he walked off, holding his right arm in his left, still in obvious pain.

Ian Thompson of SI.com reports:

It’s a big loss for the defending Eastern Conference champs, who were counting on West to help lead a second unit to relieve the burden on the starting five. Though West shoots left-handed and could eventually play with a cast, the injury left coach Doc Rivers to express hope that West could return in time for the playoffs. “It’s a compound fracture, most likely,” said Rivers. “It’s going to be a long time, let’s put it that way.”

West, a 6-foot-3 combo guard, was expected to provide backup minutes to starting point guard Rajon Rondo. Boston will hope to replace his defense and three-point shooting with 6-2 rookie Avery Bradley, the Celtics’ first-round pick who made his debut Monday in Atlanta after undergoing ankle surgery last summer.

Terrence Williams out 2 games for breaking team rules

The AP reports

New Jersey Nets sixth man Terrence Williams will miss the next two games after repeatedly breaking team rules.
Nets coach Avery Johnson said the second-year guard will be inactive for Tuesday night’s home game against the Atlanta Hawks and won’t travel to Boston for Wednesday night’s game.

Johnson wouldn’t discuss specifics. The coach said Williams has been fined a couple of times, and the message hasn’t sunk in.

“It has been something that we have dealt with for the past two to three weeks or so, and I don’t know if he completely understands what we are trying to do,” said Johnson, adding that Williams being inactive was a substitute for a fine.

Devin Harris ejected for foul on Blake Griffin

Colin Stephenson of the Newark Star-Ledger reports:

Devin Harris ejected for hard foul on Blake Griffin

Harris, the Nets’ floor leader and leading scorer, was ejected from the game for a hard foul on the L.A. Clippers’ young star, Blake Griffin with 6:42 remaining in the first half. But even without him, the Nets were still able to get their West Coast trip off to a winning start, as they grabbed an early lead against the Clippers and cruised to a 110-96 victory Monday night in Staples Center…

Harris, one of the Nets’ co-captains along with Lopez, grabbed Griffin, the Clippers’ exciting rookie, from behind on what would have been a breakaway basket and pulled him to the floor. For that, Harris was assessed a flagrant-2 foul, which will bring with it an automatic review by the NBA and could lead to a suspension.

“I was kind of looking up at the ball when I saw I couldn’t get it I tried to make sure he couldn’t get his arms up,” Harris said. “I didn’t think it was that bad when I did it, but once I came in the back and looked at it (on video), it looks pretty bad.”
