Posey to Celtics – Is that a bench emerging?
Aug 25th, 2007 by ToddAllen
Word out of Boston is that James Posey has gobbled up the C’s mid-level and will be the presumptive 6th man for two years. A good defensive player and reasonable 3-point threat, Posey is exactly the sort of player Danny Ainge needs to be pulling in for this 2-year finals window.
I’d still like to see a veteran point guard (Eddie House may be earmarked for the point, but I’ve always thought of him more as a shooter) and a little more beef up front. Counting on Scot Pollards health has been a risky proposition in the past, Big Baby is young and Kendrick Perkins hasn’t proven himself.
From here on out, Ainge is going to have to make the title run his main selling point, ’cause it looks like Posey’s got most of their available cash.
Still, this is a step in the right direction and some insurance against Pierce or Allen getting hurt.
Looks like we have our enforcer against the Bulls. If they think they can stomp all over us this year, they’ll have to deal with a Posey’s forearm.
I thnk this is an excellent pickup for the Celtics. Now they need to fill up the rest with low salary players…gambles of sorts like the Heat and Penny.
Please, we dealt with it last year….it was called “SWEEEEEEEEEP.” Let him try that on Ben Wallace and watch what happens.
IM GOING TO SAY IT AGAIN AND AGAIN…. BOSTON CELTICS ALL THE WAY. ALL WE NEED NOW IS R.PATTERSON OR EARL BOYKINS FOR THE BENCH. POSEY IS A CHAMPION AS WELL AS A VETERAN, GREAT WORK DANNY AND DOC !!!
Nice pickup. But what do you guys think about Nick Van Exel as the veteran point guard they really need.
I know, he had attitude problems, but he was in good spirits whenever he was contributing to winning teams.
He’s clutch, a great dribbler, exciting passer and, though he retired a year ago, he can play the 15-20 minutes they need from him when Rondo’s not in the game.
They definitely need a PG. Boykins would round out a classic cast. Besides, he’d be the best PG they’ve had in like 10 years! P.J. Brown would be nice too.
One freaking bench player? Yay!
They still need two starters to go with their superstars.
Signing James Posey was good for the Celtics. They still need to sign a real solid point guard. If their team stays healthy all year, mainly if they are healthy for the playoffs, they will face the Suns, Mavs, or Spurs and all those teams have the best point guards and the Celtics might get exposed. Danny Ainge need to find the Celtics a solid point guard. Payton is available but he’s a little old. Jeff Mcginnis is also available, he is still pretty good that might be who I would sign.
As a Heat fan i’m very upset that Riley showed no interest in re-signing Posey! Celtic fans u guys have gotten yourselves a great role player. Riley i ask u this- Why sign Penny Hardaway over James Posey?
Just as I was trying to get rid of my Celtics apparel the Celts dealt for Ray Allen and KG, to gang up with Pierce.
The deal left them with almost nothing on the bench, which ofcourse was the price they had to pay to get KG.
I think the addition of Scott Pollard and Eddie House where nice, but far from a bench which can go deep into the Play-offs.
The signing of James Posey was really a great one, because you need guys like him on your team; he doesn’ t really need to have the ball in his hands to be effective and if he has it, he clearly knows what to do with it.
Too bad it took almost all of the money, because I think they’ re still about 2 players away from being Real deep.
Can’ t shake the feeling that indeed an experienced PG is needed (Gary Payton, Troy Hudson?) and some more muscle and experience at the PF or C spot (Charles Oakley, Antonio Davis?).
These guys are either avaible, contemplating retirement or have just retired but might come over or unretire with the right sales pitch of having a real shot at a championship ring at a cheap price.
And really, how difficult must that be on a team anchored by KG, Paul Pierce & Ray Allen: all you have to do is pass it, rebound it and play some stiffling defense…
It Seems to me that everybody who thought paxson was stupuid for not breaking up his core of players(who by the way most of whom has been playing together for the better part of 3 years) are looking mighty naive! Thank You Danny Ainge for assembling(or at least trying) a team of proven veterans who are hungry and determined to win a championship! That way it will be No excuse when the Bulls go all the way beating a very Formidable Eastern Conference( with very balanced young teams, and battle tested veteran teams)! As Well As, the so called “unbeatable” Western Conference! I thought As A GM you are susposed to believe in the pieces you assemble! Why is this Man(Paxson being persecuted for it??
I think it wasnt the best move they can make. First of all I would have paid Boykins because he has no where else to play and ruban patterson who is a all out player like KG and they would have had 2 for that price. I personally think Boykins and Patterson would have took min salaries so it woulda been 2 for 1 unless they can somehow still add both those players to add a litte fire power from boykins and more D from patterson. If in case Allen and Pierce would go down with those type of players they can battle threw a season but playoffs all must be 100%. Also convincing Webber or Brown or both to join which shouldnt be to hard that would be something that is possible it just needs some work from AINGE.
Either way I feel Boston will Meet Denver in the 08 FINALS
Great pickup on Posey. Interesting to see how that team works together with all of those star players on that team.
I agree they still need a solid point guard to complete the team. How about Chiris Duhon from the Chicago Bulls. He is a crafty guard that can get you the ball. I dont think the bullls have any need for Duhan, they have Hinrick, Gordon and Shefalosha.
