Golden State Warriors name Rick Welts president and COO

The Golden State Warriors have named Rick Welts as the team’s new President and Chief Operating Officer, it was announced this evening.  Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Welts, 58, will oversee all business-related operations for the Warriors and will report directly to the organization’s Co-Managing Partners, Joe Lacob and Peter Guber.  He joins the Warriors following a nine-year stint with the Phoenix Suns where he served the organization as President and Chief Executive Officer for the last two seasons.  He resigned on September 9.  During his tenure in Phoenix, the Suns enjoyed success on all levels, including on the court, where the club registered five (5) 50-plus win seasons and advanced to the Western Conference Finals in 2005, 2006 and 2010.  Welts’ responsibilities in Phoenix included the supervision of all business operations for the Suns and overseeing the team’s interest in the management of US Airways Center and the WNBA Phoenix Mercury.  The Mercury won the WNBA Championship in 2007 and 2009.

Welts, one of the most respected business executives in the NBA, has accumulated 36 years of experience in the league.  He boasts an impressive and all-encompassing résumé that includes a myriad of different capacities spanning virtually every level of an NBA operation.  His indoctrination into the NBA came in 1969 as a ball boy with the Seattle SuperSonics, and he had a successful 17-year stint as a high-ranking official at the NBA league office in New York.  His recent tenure in Phoenix, which began in July of 2002 as President and Chief Operating Officer, caps his comprehensive NBA background.

“Peter Guber and I have made it quite clear since we assumed control of this team in November that we’re looking to build a world class organization from top to bottom,” said Lacob.  “We feel that we’ve taken a quantum leap in that direction today with the addition of Rick Welts as our President and COO.  Rick is simply one of the most highly-regarded executives in the NBA and his accomplishments at both the team and league levels are extremely impressive.  He’s been an integral part of every organization that he’s worked for in the NBA, including the league office in New York, where he earned the respect and admiration of David Stern, as well as with the SuperSonics in Seattle and the Suns in Phoenix.  His track record in all facets of the business – sponsorship, marketing, public relations, event management, team services, merchandising – and his ability to be strategically creative and cutting-edge make him the ideal candidate to lead our organization.  Quite honestly, I’m convinced that we could not have found a better candidate for the job.”

Prior to joining the Suns, Welts spent almost two decades (1982-1999) with the NBA league office prior to departing as the Executive Vice President, Chief Marketing Officer and President of NBA Properties.  In addition to his overall contributions in the revitalization of the league’s image and popularity, his notable accomplishments at the NBA include the creation of NBA All-Star Weekend in 1984 – a model that subsequently became a fixture in both MLB and the NHL – along with the creation of a marketing program with USA Basketball for the 1992 Olympic “Dream Team.” Along with Val Ackerman, Welts was named “Marketer of the Year” by Brandweek in 1998 for his role in launching the WNBA.  He was recipient of the annual Splaver/McHugh “Tribute to Excellence Award” in 2006.  During his time at the NBA office, he received multiple promotions and supervised a wide-range of departments, including corporate sponsorship and media sales, consumer products, international business activities, media relations, community relations, team services, special events and creative services. Welts also played a prominent role in the organization of preseason games in foreign countries and the eventual opening of international NBA offices in Australia, Asia, Europe, Mexico and Canada.

“We feel extremely fortunate to add an individual as talented as Rick Welts to our organization,” said Guber.  “He provides all of the intricate qualities that a company searches for in a President – leadership, respect, experience, creativity and, of course, passion.  His NBA background has been established, in part, as the result of tremendous vision and the ability to implement new and intriguing ideas in all forms of the business. I can unequivocally say that our organization is much better today than it was yesterday with the addition of Rick Welts.”

“It’s hard to express how excited I am to embrace this opportunity and be part of a collective group in building the Warriors into a championship caliber organization,” said Welts.  “I’ve been most impressed with Joe Lacob and Peter Guber’s vision and desire to do something great.  Not good, but great.  Many of the ingredients are here – the Warriors’ rich history, the team’s amazing fan support and the strength of the Bay Area as a sports market.  We have a lot of work to do and I can’t wait to get started.”

A native of Seattle, Washington, Welts began his NBA career with the Seattle SuperSonics at the age of 16 in 1969 and spent 10 years with his hometown team.  He served as Director of Public Relations for the Sonics during the team’s back-to-back appearances in the NBA Finals in 1978 and 1979 (the SuperSonics captured their lone NBA Championship in 1979).  After leaving the SuperSonics, he spent the following three years (1980-1982) at Bob Walsh & Associates, a sports marketing firm in the Seattle area. His non-NBA résumé includes serving as President of Fox Sports Enterprises (1999-2000).  Welts attended the University of Washington.

NBA postpones training camps, cancels October 9-15 preseason games

The NBA announced today that player training camps for the 2011-12 season have been postponed indefinitely because a new collective bargaining agreement has not been reached with the National Basketball Players Association. Training camps were scheduled to open on October 3.

In addition, the league canceled all preseason games scheduled from October 9 through October 15.

“We have regretfully reached the point on the calendar where we are not able to open training camps on time and need to cancel the first week of preseason games,” said NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver.  “We will make further decisions as warranted.”

Golden State Warriors will retire the jersey of Chris Mullin

Chris Mullin

The Golden State Warriors will retire Chris Mullin’s jersey, #17, in a special ceremony on January 20, 2012, when the team plays host to the Indiana Pacers at Oracle Arena, it was announced this evening.  Plans to retire Mullin’s jersey were first made public tonight by Owner Joe Lacob, who broke the news to a crowd of the team’s Season Ticket Holders that were gathered at Oracle Arena for an exclusive Season Ticket Holder event.

“We are looking forward to adding another former Warriors’ icon, Chris Mullin, to our exclusive list of players who have had their number retired,” said Lacob.  “Our history has been dotted with many terrific players who have had an incredible impact on our franchise over the years and Chris certainly falls into this prestigious category.  His contributions to this organization – both on the floor and in the community – are quite impressive and have certainly made him one of the most beloved figures in Bay Area sports history.   His recent Hall of Fame induction solidified his role as one of the greatest players in the history of the game on a global scale and we hope that this deserving honor on January 20th will help ensure that his many outstanding accomplishments are never forgotten here at home.”

Mullin, who spent 13 years of his 16-season NBA career as a member of the Golden State Warriors, will become the sixth player in team history to have his jersey number retired, joining Alvin Attles (#16), Rick Barry (#24), Wilt Chamberlain (#13), Tom Meschery (#14) and Nate Thurmond (#42).  Chamberlain’s jersey was the last to be retired by the organization, as the former Warriors’ great and NBA legend was honored posthumously on December 29, 1999.

The jersey retirement serves as just the latest honor celebrating Mullin’s illustrious NBA career, as the Brooklyn, NY, native was inducted in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on August 12, 2011.

“This is certainly a tremendous honor and one that I will cherish, especially when you consider the few, elite gentlemen who have preceded me,” said Mullin. “I consider it a huge privilege to join the likes of Al Attles, Rick Barry, Wilt Chamberlain, Tom Meschery and Nate Thurmond and I appreciate the fact that Joe Lacob and the Warriors’ new ownership group have asked me to be a part of this select group.  I look forward to the night and sharing this honor with the great Bay Area fans, who have been so supportive and inspirational to me over the years.  In my mind, this night will be just as much for them as it will be for me and my family.”

Originally selected by the Warriors in the first round of the 1985 NBA Draft (# 7 overall), Mullin spent the first 12 years of his NBA career in Golden State. A five-time NBA All-Star (1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993), he averaged a career-high 26.5 points during the 1988-89 season, the first of five consecutive campaigns in which he averaged 25-plus points (a feat matched by only Wilt Chamberlain in franchise history). He currently ranks among the club’s Top-10 all-time leaders in nearly every statistical category, including games played (first at 807), steals (first at 1,360), free throw percentage (second at .862), points (fourth at 16,235), assists (fourth at 3,146) and scoring average (10th at 20.1).

Prior to re-joining the Warriors for his final NBA season in 2000-01, Mullin spent three seasons with Indiana (1997-98, 1998-99, 1999-00), helping the Pacers advance to the 2000 NBA Finals.  He concluded his 16-year NBA career boasting career averages of 18.2 points and 4.1 rebounds in 986 games.

Warriors free agent forward Reggie Williams agrees to play in Spain

Golden State Warriors free agent forward Reggie Williams has signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with Caja Laboral Vitoria of the Spanish ACB League, according to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

The report says that there is a $1 million buyout should Williams look to get out of his contract early.

In the opinion of InsideHoops.com, even though the buyout is sizable, this sounds like a smart deal for Williams. With the current financial troubles many NBA teams are undergoing, Williams probably will receive minimum-level offers when he returns to the league

Andris Biedrins not signing overseas just yet

Andris Biedrins’ agent said Saturday that conflicting reports of the Warriors’ center signing with different European teams were erroneous, but Biedrins will explore overseas options next month.

“I think (Biedrins) would be open to playing overseas on a temporary or a long-term basis if the (NBA) lockout continues, but we’ve got to get him some insurance to protect his (NBA) contract,” agent Bill Duffy said. “He’s on a training regimen, and he usually takes it to another level at this time. In 20 to 30 days, he’ll be 100 percent conditioned.”

On Friday, TuBasket.com reported that Biedrins signed with VEF Riga, the Latvian League champions who will play next in the Euroleague. Blic, a Serbian tabloid newspaper, had him signing with Turkish team Anadolu Efes.

Duffy said Biedrins is friends with one of the Latvian team officials, who got excited about the chance of a signing and jumped the gun. Neither have has spoken with the Turkish team, which already has a glut of frontcourt players.

Hawks draftee Keith Benson to play in Italy

Former Oakland men’s basketball standout Keith Benson will be heading to the island of Sardinia to play professional basketball with Italian team Sassari, Oakland coach Greg Kampe said on Thursday. A second-round pick by the Atlanta Hawks, the 6-foot-11 Benson was the first Oakland player selected in the NBA draft.

“We’re delighted for Keith,” said Kampe. “I know he has worked hard in the past couple of months with our strength coach Todd Wohlfeil and he has his weight up to 233, with a goal of 240.”

Donnie Walsh wanted Chris Mullin to get Knicks GM job

Marc Berman of the New York Post reports:

As Chris Mullin is enshrined into the Naismith Hall of Fame tomorrow in Springfield, Mass., for his spectacular career at Xaverian, St. John’s and the NBA, it is a Hall of Shame the pride of Flatbush is not going in while holding a Knicks’ front-office title.

According to a league source close to Donnie Walsh, his biggest regret as Knicks president was not being able to hire Mullin as the team general manager and then groom him as his successor. In fact, the source said if owner James Dolan had granted Walsh permission to hire Mullin last summer as GM, Walsh likely would still be the president — and not an Indiana-based club consultant.

Sources said Walsh backed out of a verbal agreement on a two-year extension due to contract language partly related to control in hiring his successor.

Houston lands 2013 NBA All-Star Game

Mark Berman of My Fox Houston reports:

NBA sources told FOX 26 Sports the Houston Rockets and the City of Houston landed the NBA All-Star Game in 2013. The game will be played at Toyota Center on Feb. 17, 2013. NBA All-Star week will be Feb. 15-17. The Rockets and Toyota Center also hosted the game in 2006.

Click2Houston reports:

The entire NBA All-Star Weekend will be in the Bayou City from February 15-17, 2013. Hilton Americas Marketing Director Janice O’Neill-Cox spoke with Local 2 Sports Wednesday afternoon, saying, “We played a key role in working with the league to make sure availability was in place. It’s a big boost for our city to land the game, and we’re excited about it.”

InsideHoops.com editor says: I don’t get why Houston is getting the game again. They just had it in 2006. Meanwhile, other teams haven’t hosted it in a long time. Also, Madison Square Garden renovations will be mostly complete in time. And the new Brooklyn Nets arena will exist by mid 2012. Unusual call to send the big weekend back to Houston so soon.

Chris Mullin impressed with new direction of Warriors

The AP reports:

Chris Mullin harbors no hard feelings toward the Golden State Warriors, and the Hall of Famer says he would go back to work for them under the new regime if the fit were right.

He’s not ruling that out, either. Mullin — set to be enshrined into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame next Friday night — counts new coach Mark Jackson among his close friends. He worked with assistant general manager Bob Myers when Myers was an agent and Mullin was Golden State’s executive vice president of basketball operations.

NBA Rookie Transition Program postponed

The NBA Rookie Transition Program, scheduled for August 9-11, has been postponed.  The program, which provides first-year players with the skills and information necessary for a successful transition to the NBA, is run jointly by the NBA and the Players Association.

“Without a new collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players’ union, we will be unable to hold RTP as originally scheduled,” NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver said.  “This is an important educational program for our incoming players, and it will be rescheduled once the parties agree on a CBA.”
