Oct 21: Heat 102, Grizzlies 85

The AP reports: Dwyane Wade scored 25 points, Michael Beasley scored nine of his 19 in the fourth quarter and the Miami Heat beat the Memphis Grizzlies 102-85 Tuesday night for their first preseason win in nearly two years… Udonis Haslem had 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Shawn Marion added 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Miami (1-4), which had dropped 12 straight exhibitions since beating Orlando on Oct. 24, 2006… O.J. Mayo scored 28 points for Memphis on 12-for-19 shooting, with five rebounds and five assists. Darko Milicic scored 12 for the Grizzlies (2-5), who allowed 11 points off turnovers in the final 12 minutes.

Grizzlies waive Brent Petway

The Memphis Grizzlies waived forward Brent Petway, Grizzlies General Manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Wallace announced today.

Petway, who signed on Sept. 29, appeared in one preseason game at Houston on Oct. 7, recording two points and one rebound in four minutes.

An updated preseason roster is attached. The current roster stands at 14 players.

The Grizzlies will play their final two preseason games vs. the Miami Heat at 6:30 p.m. CST on Tuesday, Oct. 21 at AmericanAirlines Arena and vs. the Orlando Magic at 6 p.m. CST on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at AMWAY Arena.

Oct 17: Pacers 112, Grizzlies 86

The AP reports: Rookies Brandon Rush and Roy Hibbert continue to put up big numbers for the Indiana Pacers. Rush had 17 points and five rebounds, and Hibbert added 12 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks, leading the Pacers to a 112-86 preseason victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night… Stephen Graham had 16 points, Danny Granger scored 12 and T.J. Ford chipped in 11 for the Pacers, who improved to 3-2 in the preseason… Rudy Gay had 19 points, rookie O.J. Mayo scored 17 and Hakim Warrick 10 as Grizzlies dropped to 2-4 in the preseason.

Oct 15: Rockets 101, Grizzlies 97

The AP reports: Von Wafer scored 17 of his 23 points in the fourth quarter, D.J. Strawberry added 20 points and the Houston Rockets put on a 3-point shooting clinic in beating the Memphis Grizzlies 101-97 in a preseason game Wednesday night… Aaron Brooks finished with 14 points and nine assists for Houston, while Rafer Alston scored 13. Darrell Arthur, the rookie from Kansas, and Rudy Gay led Memphis with 14 points each. Darko Milicic and Mike Conley had 12 points apiece. Hakim Warrick and Quinton Ross finished with 10 each. While the Rockets were hitting 18 shots from outside the arc, Memphis was 4-of-12 on the night.

Grizzlies make training staff promotions

Current Memphis Grizzlies Assistant Athletic Trainer Jason Biles was promoted to strength and conditioning coach, General Manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Wallace announced today.  In a related move, former University of North Florida Head Athletic Trainer Jim Scholler was named the club’s new assistant athletic trainer.

Biles enters his second season with the Grizzlies after he was appointed the team’s assistant athletic trainer in August 2007. In his new role, Biles will oversee the off-court conditioning of the Grizzlies, enhancing their performance through exercises in flexibility, strength, speed and power, while assisting Grizzlies Head Athletic Trainer Drew Graham with rehabilitation of injuries.

Prior to joining the Grizzlies, Biles worked at Athletes Performance in Las Vegas, where he served as the performance physical therapy manager and developed and implemented performance training programs for professional athletes in the NBA, NFL, MLB, PGA and ATP. He was also the lead physical therapist at the Bollettieri Sports Medicine Center at the IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla., where he traveled with professional tennis players and provided rehabilitation for athletes training for the NFL combines and NBA offseason training programs.

Scholler spent nine of the last 10 years as an athletic trainer for the Ospreys, including the last four as the head athletic trainer, where he oversaw administration and supervision of all athletic training services provided to UNF student-athletes.

He served as UNF’s graduate assistant athletic trainer from 1998-2001, covering baseball and men’s soccer and as the Ospreys assistant athletic trainer from 2001-03, providing care to the men’s basketball, volleyball, men’s and women’s tennis, cheerleading and dance teams.

Scholler, who also served as the athletic trainer for the Greek National Baseball team  in 2003 and 2005 that competed in the European Baseball Championships, spent one season as the assistant athletic trainer at Notre Dame in 2003-04, where he oversaw the health care of the men’s and women’s cross country and men’s lacrosse teams.

The Grand Haven, Mich. native earned his bachelor’s degree in movement science from the University of Michigan in 1998 and his master’s degree in healthcare administration from UNF in 2001.

Oct 13: Grizzlies 103, Pacers 95

The AP reports: Rookie guard O.J. Mayo scored 26 points, including six 3-pointers, to lead the Memphis Grizzlies to a 103-95 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Monday night… In addition to Mayo’s contributions, the Grizzlies got production from another rookie. Marc Gasol, brother of former Grizzlies forward Pau Gasol, scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds in 35 minutes. Rudy Gay finished with 16 points. T.J. Ford had 18 points for Indiana (1-2). Jarrett Jack and Roy Hibbert each added 17.

Grizzlies waive Malick Badiane

The Memphis Grizzlies waived forward/center Malick Badiane (pronounced Muh-LEEK BAHD-ee-EN), Grizzlies General Manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations Chris Wallace announced today.

Badiane, who signed on Sept. 30, appeared in one preseason game vs. Washington on Oct. 8, logging one minute.

The current roster stands at 15 players.

The Grizzlies host the Indiana Pacers at 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13 at the FedExForum.

Oct 10: Grizzlies 91, Bobcats 79

The AP reports: Rudy Gay scored 17 points, and Hakim Warrick added 14 points and eight rebounds Friday night as Memphis won its first preseason game with a 92-79 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats. Reserve Quinton Ross added 13 points for Memphis (1-2), while rookie O.J. Mayo finished with 12 points on 5-of-17 shooting. Mike Conley added 10 points… Jason Richardson led the Bobcats with 14 points, while Gerald Wallace finished with 13. Andre Brown had 12 points and nine rebounds for Charlotte (0-2).

Oct 8: Wizards 89, Grizzlies 80

The AP reports: JaVale McGee, Washington’s first-round draft choice out of Nevada-Reno, had 20 points and eight rebounds Wednesday night to lead the Wizards to a 89-80 preseason victory over the Memphis Grizzlies. McGee shot 8-for-12 from the field for Washington. Andray Blatche scored 14 points and DerMarr Johnson had 11… Rudy Gay scored 21 points on 5-for-19 shooting for Memphis, winless in two games. Hakim Warrick added 16 points, but was 3-for-9 as the Grizzlies shot 35 percent on the night. Greg Buckner finished with 11 for Memphis and rookie Marc Gasol had 10. Meanwhile, O.J. Mayo, the third-overall pick from Southern Cal, connected on 3-of-11 from the field for Memphis and finished with seven points.

Oct 7: Rockets 96, Grizzlies 93

The AP reports: Ron Artest gave Houston fans an early glimpse of what he brings to the team. Artest scored 12 of his 15 points in the first quarter of his Rockets debut, and Houston beat the Memphis Grizzlies 96-93 on Tuesday night in its preseason opener… Tracy McGrady sat out to rest his sore left knee… Carl Landry, Yao’s backup, had 18 points and nine rebounds… Rudy Gay scored 14 for the Grizzlies and had a pair of highlight-reel dunks in the fourth quarter. Hakim Warrick led Memphis with 15, including a dunk that tied it at 92.
