Stephon Marbury about to begin new season playing basketball in China

Stephon Marbury

China’s most beloved New Yorker, Stephon Marbury, arrived for his third season in the Chinese Basketball Association at Beijing Capital Airport on October 6th with a bunch of bags, a lot of smiles and two big band-aids on his head. (And as always, a lot of people with cameras taking his photos.) After playing one and a half seasons Taiyuan, Shanxi province, and Foshan, Guangdong, two Chinese cities not exactly known as foreign hotspots, Marbury has finally made it to his Chinese professional basketball mecca, Beijing.

This season, Steph will play for the Beijing Shougang Ducks. Last season, led by former New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks center, Randolph Morris, the Ducks finished in eighth place, which gave them the right to be swept out of the first round of the playoffs by eventual league runners-up, Xinjiang Guanghui. Aiming to build off that success, the Ducks brought back Morris for another year and signed Marbury, who interestingly enough was close to signing with the team last year before team management ultimately decided to go with Steve Francis instead. (We don’t need to remind you how that ended up.) Although the team will be weakened with the departure of Jordanian national teammer, Zaid Abbas, who moved on to Fujian SBS this season to act as their Asian import, teaming up with Morris and Taiwanese national team point guard/CBA heartthrob, Lee Hsueh-lin, will give Marbury by far his best chance to make it to the post-season for the first time in his Chinese career.

Phoenix Suns would hold 2011-12 training camp at Grand Canyon University

When and if the Suns hold a training camp for the 2011-12 season, they will be getting away for their building and bonding to west Phoenix.

After spending recent training camps in San Diego, Tucson and Italy, the Suns are planning to hold their preseason training camp at the new Grand Canyon University Arena.

The dynamics of the lockout dictate that the Suns have a plan that can work on the fly for whenever a collective-bargaining agreement is reached. The camp/preseason timetable could be crunched but the Suns still like the idea of leaving their usual confines at US Airways Center for a camp, even if it is only 14 miles away in this case. Training camp normally lasts about a week and includes some two-a-day workouts.

Steve Nash criticizes owners and league over NBA lockout

steve nash

Phoenix Suns point guard Steve Nash isn’t happy over the NBA’s announcement that the first two weeks of the regular season will be canceled.

And the star player has taken to Twitter to vent his frustrations over the stalemate between the players and the league’s owners.

“The players are negotiating to take less money & let’s be clear that’s not going to lower ticket prices, it just lines the owners pockets,” said Nash.

Nash seems to doubt the league’s validity that most NBA teams are losing money.

“You believe that? There’s a reason they won’t open their books. You know we want to play & you understand the propaganda/misinformation from the owners,” said Nash.

Phoenix Suns name Brad Casper president of business and non-basketball operations

phoenix suns

The Phoenix Suns today announced that prominent local business leader Brad Casper has been named the team’s president to lead business and non-basketball operations, effective immediately. A 25-year veteran of consumer businesses, Casper most recently served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Henkel Consumer Goods, Inc., a $1.7 billion North American business based in Scottsdale, Ariz., which included the former Dial Corporation.

Lon Babby will continue in his role as President of Basketball Operations. Jason Rowley, who has been the Suns’ General Counsel for nearly four years and served as the interim head of business operations, has been promoted to Chief Operating Officer and will report to Casper.

“We are proud to have been able to attract someone of Brad’s caliber to lead our business operations,” said Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver. “His expertise in organizational development, marketing and branding, coupled with his passion for the Suns, will be an enormous asset for our organization, our marketing partners, and our fans. His dedicated involvement in the Arizona community exemplifies and extends our organization’s commitment to the city and state.”

Sarver added, “Rowley’s work warranted his promotion to Chief Operating Officer. He will provide important continuity and leadership.”

Casper served as President and CEO of The Dial Corporation and led its integration into German-based Henkel Group as Henkel Consumer Goods, Inc., after the 2004 purchase. During his tenure from 2005-2010, Casper oversaw construction of the company’s headquarters and research lab in Scottsdale, engineered the acquisition of Right Guard deodorants, and led the development of successful new products like Dial body scrubs, Renuzit air fresheners, and Purex Complete 3-in-1 Laundry Sheets.

An Ohio native, Casper is a 1982 graduate of Virginia Tech University with a bachelor’s degree in finance whose entrance into the business world came as a financial analyst with General Electric. Then, in what he considers the big break of his career, Casper was hired as a brand manager with Procter & Gamble at the age of 28. The position took him and his wife to Kobe, Japan, though the couple never had previously owned passports. The youngest brand manager in the firm’s history, Casper’s performance earned him a transfer to Hong Kong and then mainland China where he oversaw the launch of numerous products in the Asian market. He rose to the position of Vice President and General Manager of Procter & Gamble before being named the President of Church & Dwight, the manufacturer of Arm & Hammer products. He subsequently joined Dial.

Named by the Phoenix Business Journal as one of the state’s “Most Admired CEOs” in both 2008 and 2009, Casper’s extensive involvement in civic and business organizations includes the Greater Phoenix Economic Council (GPEC), Greater Phoenix Leadership (GPL), the Global Institute of Sustainability (GIOS) at Arizona State University, and the Scottsdale Unified School District Foundation. He is also a Fellow at the Thunderbird Graduate School of Management and serves on the board of directors of Grand Canyon Education Inc., which operates Grand Canyon University.

Casper and wife Kay reside in Paradise Valley and have been married for 28 years. The couple began dating in high school but first met as 10-year-olds at a cotton candy stand. They have three children: 19-year-old Colton, a student at Arizona State, 15-year-old Carly and 14-year-old Brody.

Suns Vice Chairman Sam Garvin said, “During Brad’s career he has been instrumental in creating a culture of innovation and growth, launching and developing numerous multi-billion dollar brands. He has a deep understanding of sports marketing through his previous experiences sponsoring Team USA Hockey, Major League Baseball, and the NBA, as well as being a marketing partner with the Suns after his arrival in the Valley. We are excited to have Brad leading our business.”

Rowley assumes the role of Chief Operating Officer after four seasons as the club’s Senior Vice President and General Counsel, responsible for all legal matters pertaining to the organization’s basketball, business and arena operations. Rowley received his bachelor’s degree and J.D. from the University of Arizona and prior to entering law school served in the U.S. Navy. He began his legal career in 2001 with the law firm of Snell & Wilmer in Phoenix and was corporate counsel for Van Tuyl Group, the nation’s largest privately held automotive retailer, before joining the Suns.

Earl Clark returns from China, will be an unrestricted NBA free agent

Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel reports:

earl clark

Former Orlando Magic forward Earl Clark will be released from his contract with a Chinese Basketball Association team and will be free to sign with an NBA team as an unrestricted free agent whenever the lockout ends, Clark’s agent said.

Happy Walters, who represents Clark, said the 6-foot-10 forward has returned to the United States because Clark’s girlfriend is seven weeks away from giving birth to a baby boy and is having some complications.

“He wanted to be there and was not comfortable being in China with problems happening,” Walters told the Orlando Sentinel via e-mail. “He is bummed, but family comes first.

“The team in China has been very supportive and understanding and they will release him from his contract,” Walters added.

Golden State Warriors name Rick Welts president and COO

golden state warriors

The Golden State Warriors have named Rick Welts as the team’s new President and Chief Operating Officer, it was announced this evening.  Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Welts, 58, will oversee all business-related operations for the Warriors and will report directly to the organization’s Co-Managing Partners, Joe Lacob and Peter Guber.  He joins the Warriors following a nine-year stint with the Phoenix Suns where he served the organization as President and Chief Executive Officer for the last two seasons.  He resigned on September 9.  During his tenure in Phoenix, the Suns enjoyed success on all levels, including on the court, where the club registered five (5) 50-plus win seasons and advanced to the Western Conference Finals in 2005, 2006 and 2010.  Welts’ responsibilities in Phoenix included the supervision of all business operations for the Suns and overseeing the team’s interest in the management of US Airways Center and the WNBA Phoenix Mercury.  The Mercury won the WNBA Championship in 2007 and 2009.

Welts, one of the most respected business executives in the NBA, has accumulated 36 years of experience in the league.  He boasts an impressive and all-encompassing résumé that includes a myriad of different capacities spanning virtually every level of an NBA operation.  His indoctrination into the NBA came in 1969 as a ball boy with the Seattle SuperSonics, and he had a successful 17-year stint as a high-ranking official at the NBA league office in New York.  His recent tenure in Phoenix, which began in July of 2002 as President and Chief Operating Officer, caps his comprehensive NBA background.

“Peter Guber and I have made it quite clear since we assumed control of this team in November that we’re looking to build a world class organization from top to bottom,” said Lacob.  “We feel that we’ve taken a quantum leap in that direction today with the addition of Rick Welts as our President and COO.  Rick is simply one of the most highly-regarded executives in the NBA and his accomplishments at both the team and league levels are extremely impressive.  He’s been an integral part of every organization that he’s worked for in the NBA, including the league office in New York, where he earned the respect and admiration of David Stern, as well as with the SuperSonics in Seattle and the Suns in Phoenix.  His track record in all facets of the business – sponsorship, marketing, public relations, event management, team services, merchandising – and his ability to be strategically creative and cutting-edge make him the ideal candidate to lead our organization.  Quite honestly, I’m convinced that we could not have found a better candidate for the job.”

Prior to joining the Suns, Welts spent almost two decades (1982-1999) with the NBA league office prior to departing as the Executive Vice President, Chief Marketing Officer and President of NBA Properties.  In addition to his overall contributions in the revitalization of the league’s image and popularity, his notable accomplishments at the NBA include the creation of NBA All-Star Weekend in 1984 – a model that subsequently became a fixture in both MLB and the NHL – along with the creation of a marketing program with USA Basketball for the 1992 Olympic “Dream Team.” Along with Val Ackerman, Welts was named “Marketer of the Year” by Brandweek in 1998 for his role in launching the WNBA.  He was recipient of the annual Splaver/McHugh “Tribute to Excellence Award” in 2006.  During his time at the NBA office, he received multiple promotions and supervised a wide-range of departments, including corporate sponsorship and media sales, consumer products, international business activities, media relations, community relations, team services, special events and creative services. Welts also played a prominent role in the organization of preseason games in foreign countries and the eventual opening of international NBA offices in Australia, Asia, Europe, Mexico and Canada.

“We feel extremely fortunate to add an individual as talented as Rick Welts to our organization,” said Guber.  “He provides all of the intricate qualities that a company searches for in a President – leadership, respect, experience, creativity and, of course, passion.  His NBA background has been established, in part, as the result of tremendous vision and the ability to implement new and intriguing ideas in all forms of the business. I can unequivocally say that our organization is much better today than it was yesterday with the addition of Rick Welts.”

“It’s hard to express how excited I am to embrace this opportunity and be part of a collective group in building the Warriors into a championship caliber organization,” said Welts.  “I’ve been most impressed with Joe Lacob and Peter Guber’s vision and desire to do something great.  Not good, but great.  Many of the ingredients are here – the Warriors’ rich history, the team’s amazing fan support and the strength of the Bay Area as a sports market.  We have a lot of work to do and I can’t wait to get started.”

A native of Seattle, Washington, Welts began his NBA career with the Seattle SuperSonics at the age of 16 in 1969 and spent 10 years with his hometown team.  He served as Director of Public Relations for the Sonics during the team’s back-to-back appearances in the NBA Finals in 1978 and 1979 (the SuperSonics captured their lone NBA Championship in 1979).  After leaving the SuperSonics, he spent the following three years (1980-1982) at Bob Walsh & Associates, a sports marketing firm in the Seattle area. His non-NBA résumé includes serving as President of Fox Sports Enterprises (1999-2000).  Welts attended the University of Washington.

The NBA announced today that player training camps for the 2011-12 season have been postponed indefinitely because a new collective bargaining agreement has not been reached with the National Basketball Players Association. Training camps were scheduled to open on October 3.

In addition, the league canceled all preseason games scheduled from October 9 through October 15.

“We have regretfully reached the point on the calendar where we are not able to open training camps on time and need to cancel the first week of preseason games,” said NBA Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver.  “We will make further decisions as warranted.”
