The AP reports: The Denver Nuggets didn’t need Carmelo Anthony’s offense to beat Portland. Their defense wouldn’t let Brandon Roy have another career night. Nene scored 19 points and had 11 rebounds, Chauncey Billups added 19 points and 10 assists, and the Nuggets’ defense shut down Roy to beat the Trail Blazers 97-89 on Monday night. Roy scored a career-high 52 points against Phoenix on Thursday, but Denver’s defense held the Portland guard to just eight points… With Roy struggling, LaMarcus Aldridge pitched in with 20 points and Travis Outlaw had 15. Greg Oden, who also was in foul trouble most of the game, fouled out with 10 points… “That’s the way it has to be,” said Kenyon Martin, who led the Nuggets with 12 rebounds. “There are some guys who have to step up and play well, which they did tonight.”

Props to Steve Blake
The Portland Trail Blazers recently beat the Phoenix Suns, and while Brandon Roy was incredible in the win, props go to Portland point guard Steve Blake. The Oregonian (Jason Quick) reports (via blog):
Nate McMillan raved about Blake’s game management (10 assists, zero turnovers), hot shooting (22 points, 8-of-15, including 4-of-7 from behind the arc) and his defense of Suns star Steve Nash (Nash went 5-of-14 with 11 assists, six turnovers while Blake had four steals). It was plain and simple: Blake had outplayed Nash. “And that,” McMillan said. “Has never happened before.” Another important Blake statistic: He went 2-for-2 from the free throw line, both makes coming at a crucial time: 2:07 left in the game and the Blazers trailing by two. They were the first attempts for Blake since he missed four of five attempts in the final 20.6 seconds against the Clippers.
For the season, Blake in 29.6 minutes per game averages 11.2 points, 2.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.0 steals on acceptable 44.3% shooting and impressive 41.7% three-pointers.
Blake is #6 in the league in assists per turnover (3.46), #10 in three-pointers made (53), and #15 in threes per 48 minutes.
He’s solid, very unspectacular, but seems to be doing the job for the Blazers.
Dec 18: Blazers 124, Suns 119
The AP reports: Brandon Roy kept scoring until the Portland Trail Blazers had finally finished off the Phoenix Suns. Roy scored a career-high 52 points, including a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 1:01 left, in Portland’s 124-119 comeback victory over Thursday night… Roy was 14-of-27 from the field and 19-of-21 at the line. He topped his career high of 38 set last Friday night in a double-overtime loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, and ended up two points short of the franchise record of 54 set by Damon Stoudamire against New Orleans on Jan. 14, 2005… Blazers guard Steve Blake matched his season high with 22 points and added 10 assists, and LaMarcus Aldridge scored 10 of his 16 points in the first quarter to help Portland improve to 17-10. With the victory, Portland ended an 11-game losing streak to Phoenix dating to March 12, 2006. Amare Stoudemire led the Suns with 23 points, Matt Barnes added 22, Shaquille O’Neal had 19, and Steve Nash finished with 15 points and 11 assists.

The AP reports: Brandon Roy scored 29 points before sitting out the fourth quarter, and the Portland Trail Blazers snapped a three-game losing streak Tuesday night with a 109-77 victory over the struggling Sacramento Kings. Playing with a splint on his injured right pinkie finger, Roy fell just short of scoring 30 points for the fourth straight game… LaMarcus Aldridge had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Blazers, who stopped their longest skid of the season. John Salmons had 16 of his 21 points in the first quarter for the Kings and he didn’t score in the second half. Sacramento fell to 1-1 under interim coach Kenny Natt, who took over for the fired Reggie Theus on Monday. Francisco Garcia was the only other Sacramento player in double figures with 12 points on 2-of-8 shooting.
