Jazz qualify for playoffs, get last spot in West
The win over the Suns means the Jazz have made the playoffs:

As for the playoffs, they will likely begin for the Jazz either Saturday or Sunday in San Antonio or Oklahoma City. The Spurs have clinched the No. 1 spot and the Jazz would meet them if they end up in the No. 8 spot.

However, if Denver loses road games against Oklahoma City on Wednesday and Minnesota on Thursday and the Jazz defeat Portland on Thursday, the Jazz would end up with the No. 7 seed and face Oklahoma City in the first round.

Because of the shortened season, the NBA playoffs are expected to be more condensed than usual with games every other day. That means Jazz fans can expect to see games next week, either Wednesday and Friday or Thursday and Saturday.

Good stuff from O'Conner:

Some fans saying Jazz made a mistake by making the playoffs and having their first-round pick go to Minnesota:

You know what? We got two first-round picks two years ago, we got two first-round picks a year ago and we got Jeremy [Evans], who we like. That's five young players. It's not like we have to have an infusion of younger talent. That's not something that's paramount. If we don't have it, then next year we get two picks. We could have two picks for sure, or we could have one and we don't know where it goes.

If you go back and look at the 14th and 15th players that were drafted most of the years, then you're going to say to yourself, 'I don't think they're game-changers.' Now, there's one or two that are. The consideration we have is for our organization. This is a very important step.

We've got kids that have busted their butt for 65 games to make the playoffs. For us to say, 'I'm disappointed we made it because we didn't get the 13th or 14th pick in the draft' is sacrilegious to me. You keep score, you win. If you're going to keep score, if you're going to play golf and you're going to keep score, you try and win. If you're playing your kids in something and you don't beat 'em and they know you're not trying to win, what fun is it for them? What do you teach them? What have we taught our young kids if we didn't just try to drag them to the finish line and quit in the playoffs?

I agree with him. I think you get way more benefit from making the playoffs then missing and keeping a pick and using it on a player who might not even pan out to anything worthwhile. As he said, they've added 5 young guys in the past 2 years, who all look to have good to great careers ahead of them, so it's not an immediate need.

Some people wonder why certain teams can never seem to get out of the gutter and it's because they have losing cultures, which is propegated by stupid ideas like "let's miss the playoffs so we can keep the 14th pick". That's complete nonsense.

Unless you're stuck in Atlanta's spot of being an above averge team in a top heavy conference I'm pretty sure playoffs are always the way to go/

For long term improvement, making the 8th seed and getting swept or losing in 5 is not doing anything positive. I mean, I'm happy they made it, but if your long term goal is to win a championship, then taking that draft pick is the right move.

The 14th pick isn't likely to be the difference between a championship and not. The guy that sounds like the most Jazz-like pg, Marshall, which is really what they need is pretty low in mock drafts. They can still get him if they want with their 2nd round pick/future picks/Tomic/ expiring contracts/TPE/cash/etc. I'd go all in if there's a pg they like or even if there is someone they like better than the young guys they have. The future is now. Something they should have learned during the Stockton and Malone era not to mention the abbreviated Deron era.
