This roster would have been nice on a rookie QB contract. The offensive supporting cast is already in place for the QB, and those picks plus all that money they wouldn't have to give Dak could have been used to build a good defense before the rookie QB deal is up.

The problem with this Cowboys team isn't Dak, he's a good QB. It's the fact they don't have a defense and probably can't build one unless they hit the jackpot in the draft like the Seahawks did in the Richard Sherman draft where you are getting HOF type players in the fifth round.

its def possible that a trade like that works out in their favor, and it could ultimately put them over the top ... but its gotta be pretty damn hard to take that dive when you already have a young QB like Dak who has shown some flashes of greatness

The Rams and the Colts are out of the bidding. The Panthers would be bidding against who by offering this year's #8? Dak would enter a trade market where teams like Bears and Raiders are in a holding pattern Watson or Wilson to become officially available.

After the season, the Cowboys can either let him walk as an unrestricted free agent and get into bidding wars with every other team that thinks they're a QB away from being a contender, or they could franchise for the third season in a row. The cost of that third tag would be a little over $54 million. All fully guaranteed, and all counting directly against the 2022 cap.

Jerry Jones screwed up by not getting a deal in place with Dak after the 2019 season. He kept trying to "win" the negotiations by insisting on a five year deal, but Dak had all the leverage and wasn't going to budge off of four years. A deal signed after the 2019 season would have saved the Cowboys a few million.

The Patriots got Cam for that price because he had a terrible year in 2020. He finished 30th out of 33 eligible players in QBR, and that's a statistic that takes into account his running yards. He threw for 8 TDs and 10 interceptions. He was so ineffective that he was actually pulled in the middle of a few games and replaced with his backup. If you put him on the Cowboys he'd be better, sure. But not that much better. He's still not taking them to the playoffs unless the rest of the East is as pathetic as it was last season.
