New York City's migrant crisis will cost the city more than $4billion this fiscal year if the situation continues - as mayor Eric Adams warned the influx of asylum seekers could destroy the city.


Despite mayor Adams' cries for help from the state and federal government, the city has not received aid to cover the extra costs, so the $4.7billion would come from the city's budget. That amount is equal to the budgets for the city's sanitation, fire and parks departments combined

Meanwhile, the buses full of migrants continue to arrive, with at least four unloading on Port Authority in just two days.

While the migrants used to come mostly from Venezuela, which has the biggest refugee crisis in the world right now, tied only with Ukraine - more than seven million have left the nation as it has collapsed politically and economically.

From 2015 to 2018, only around 100 Venezuelans were stopped annually at the border. From October 2021 to August 2022, that number stood at 150,000.

However, experts and city officials now say most of the migrants come from Africa, particularly Senegal and Nigeria.

The real amount is much, much higher. Last year it was reported that over 5 million had already entered the US. By now the figure is likely 5-7 million.

Trump was not documenting them or sheltering and feeding them. That's the difference. They were still entering the country.

This is likely in part an effort to counteract inflation. When you dump a ton of money into an economy - or in other words, increase supply - the value of dollars goes down. The easiest way to counteract the diminished value brought on by increased supply is to then increase demand. Which adding people to an economy does.

All the money in circulation, whether it’s a rich oligarch’s bank account or a union employee’s retirement savings, depends on demand for its value. Without a demand the money is simply worthless.

The only way to keep demand up is to keep adding people. You can either do that through more births or more immigration. People aged 0-18 in the developed world have a higher carbon footprint than young people in poorer places, so I guess the idea is to cover some of our population needs with adult immigrants. Ofc the lower the birthrate gets in the US, the more it will rely on immigrants.

It’s tricky because none of us want our culture replaced. At the same time, a SIGNIFICANT portion of the society we enjoy isnt actually affordable. It only exists because it’s been built up on debt, which was provided on the contingency of growth. If we stagnate growth and default on debt, the economy will tank, unemployment will skyrocket, and chaos will loom.

It’s not clear what the solution is. Most of us here enjoy a first world lifestyle that includes restaurants with waiters, convenience stores with clerks, grocery stores with stocked produce, etc. We have a lot more indulgence in society because of immigrants and debt than what most people realize. Without it we’d all have to work more and enjoy less.

Probably once technology sufficiently replaces immigrant jobs, we will cut off immigration, default on our debt, and leave a lot of other countries who rely on a business relationship with us to eat shit. The US is at the top so we’ll be the first capable of creating a stable isolationist economy. Countries around the world we loan money to, buy shit from, and protect with our military like Vietnam, Nigeria, Nicaraugua etc could be in for a major titanic shit show. Like… a virtual return to the stone age with roving tribes of warring chieftans. Unless we can find solutions to the growth problem that are satisfactory for everyone. If not, a small percent of the world will become technological bionic overlords to the remaining primitive human zoo. Which is already kinda the case, but the contrast on both sides will grow markedly.
