They were comparable offensively in '84, you might give the edge to Dr. J, although I believe McHale's big edge on defense makes up for it.

To say Erving was better than McHale in '85 is simply false. Erving was in noticeable decline by that point, while McHale was Boston's best player in the '85 Finals averaging 26/11 on 60% shooting. Erving didn't come close to producing anything like that in '85. McHale even dropped 56 on the Pistons that year, his numbers would have been better if he was a starter all year. We done with Dr. J!

Doc was All-NBA 2nd Team in 84. I'd love whatever you're smoking. Gotta be the good stuff!
In 85, Doc was 20/5/3 and McHale wasn't even an All-Star.
McHale better tho because he shot 60% from the field!

Little known fact: While Doc J and Barkley were taking turns pummeling Larry Bird, Kevin McHale just watched his teammate get that work. No jump in or anything. He was right beside them.

    We done with Scary McHale!

Let's be real. Guys like Alex English, Kiki, & McHale had just a good of case to make the All-NBA Team over Erving in '84. They just didn't have the name power Dr. J had. With that said, I think you could make a solid case for Dr. J over McHale in '84, even though I would take McHale.

1985? No chance. McHale was clearly better. And Erving shouldn't even have been an All-star in '85, McHale was better and Dominique Wilkins was straight up robbed. Averaged 27 PPG compared to Erving's 20 points. To make matters worse, Erving was an All-star starter over Bernard King who was clearly better by that point, just shows you how overrated Dr. J was when he was nearing retirement.

Erving was gifted 3 All-star selections in his final 3 seasons.

    We done with Dr. J!

McHale wasn't even a full time starter in 84. Doc was 6th in MVP voting. Of course, that's not enough for big bag McHale.
Philly had the 3rd best record in the league in 84 while teammates English and Kiki led the Nuggets to 38 wins.

Lol at being gifted an All-Star selection when you are on the All-NBA 2nd Team.

85 Sixers won 58 games and had the 4th best record in the league. Hawks meanwhile won a whopping 34 games. Probably why Nique was left away from the teams.

Sixers were still producing 54+ win seasons in those years with old Doctor J.
He didn't steal anyone's slot, his teams were top 5 in wins

Manu & Hondo weren't starters at one point, doesn't mean anything.

Philly underachieved in '84. They had like 4-5 all-star caliber players and still barely cracked 50 plus wins. To finish 6th in MVP voting just shows again how overrated he became.

In '85, Barkley was their spark plug and why they won more games compared to '84 and the team still had Moses. Atlanta was a bad team, but Dominique was a baller. Absolute joke that Erving made All-star over either McHale or Dominique that year. And McHale was killing it in the '85 playoffs, outplayed Bird in the Finals.

McHale was The Man. He led Boston in scoring across 18 NBA Finals games from 1985 to 1987. 18! That's nearly a quarter of a regular season.

And Moses also won MVP and missed the cut, but wouldn't fight too hard if someone put him over Kareem.
That 100% applies to Lebron. Oh the irony.

How would you make the teams if a player could only be used once?

Would you put LeBron on the 00s team or the 10s team?

Obviously the 10s team. That's where he had the bulk of his prime. He wasn't even around for half of the 00s decade.

More like MJ. He wasn't even voted All-Star starter in '03, but the league still made him a starter in that game. A game which he shot 9/27 and lost.

The "win" argument L.Kizzle is trying to use to justify Erving making the All-star game over other players in the mid 80's is atrocious. He is literally giving Dr. J points for playing with Moses, Toney, Cheeks, & a young Barkley. Nobody gave a shit when MJ made All-star teams while playing for a garbage Wizards teams, but for other players they get penalized. Just shows you when you have the name power of Dr. J & MJ, you get away with a lot.

Not Dominque's fault his best teammate on that '85 Hawks team was a second year, 23 year old Doc Rivers who wasn't even in his prime yet.

I'm sure you two are on Kevin McHale's payroll, gotta be lol.
Larry Bird didn't even lobby this hard for Kevy-Kev, lol.

You said McHale should have been an all-star over Doc in 85 when he had worse stats and his team won like 3 more games.

You're basically ignoring Docs first half of the decade to try to boost up McHale's 2 best seasons.

What Doc did from 80-84 trumps anything McHale did in the decade.

Doc couldn't even lead his team to a title, needed Moses to finally break through. Couldn't beat the Lakers without Kareem in that game 6 in 1980. Young, second year Bird was spanking MVP Erving in the '81 ECF, completely outplayed him.

Let's look at the '85 playoffs just for giggles.

    Erving: 17|6|4 on 45% shooting
    McHale: 22|10|2|2 on 57% shooting

Erving was outplayed by teammates Moses, Barkley, & Cheeks in the '85 postseason

McHale was outplaying MVP Larry Bird in the Finals in '85.

We done with overrated Dr. J

McHale cooking in the '85 NBA Finals! How many easy shots are there in this clip? I don't see any bird-fed buckets from Bird. It's one of the worst false narratives: that McHale's game was reliant on Bird & that he only shot those high percentages because of him.

    Game 6, 1985 NBA Finals:

Dick Stockton: "If the Celtics have an MVP in this series, it has to be this man: Kevin McHale -- doing it again today. Look at the consistent scoring: 31, 28, 24; he has scored 20 or more in four of the previous five (games.)"

Tom Heinsohn: "How he's doing it is beyond me. He's lost close to 15 pounds since Maxwell got hurt, and they shifted an awful lot of offensive burden on him after Maxwell got hurt."

Dick Stockton: "Everyone has had an impossible task to try to match up with him throughout all of the playoffs."

Tom Heinsohn: "He is such a unique player with those long arms; he plays a lot bigger than he is, and he's also got exceptional quickness, even for a man 6'10"."
Dick Stockton: "32 for McHale, and the Celtics have it down to 4."

Tom Heinsohn: "McHale's having a game that'll put his number up here in the rafters."

    This thread derailed quickly.

I don't have a problem putting the same player on more than one team. 80's Jordan and 90's Jordan have different assets. And each suits its team well.

80's Jordan running the floor with Magic is ridiculous. And with Bird on the wing? Forget it. He's the only shooter on the team, but it doesn't matter.

Some of the other teams will be a challenge up front, but 80's still wins.
