MLK wasn't universally loved and appreciated during his time either. He was controversial to a portion of the country as well. Only in death did he become an everlasting symbol. Fast forward a few decades and he's universally revered now. What people know him for now is his message.

The right is going to make an icon and a symbol out of Kirk just the same, and rightfully so. He died for his opinion. He died for his speech. His face will be on tee shirts, his name will be chanted. Sept 10 will become a yearly memorial just as Sept 11 did. The lefties will roll their eyes and pout in the short term, but in due time Kirk's message will rise above.
