Until he stops trying to be an ISO perimeter guard he will never be a true #1 option.
He shows flashes of playing like he should, but far too often he reverts back to wanting to be a 7'5 guard.

This is what bothers me the most. I've seen possessions where he stands out at the perimeter for most of the shot clock. Like, guy, you're 7'5.

Re: Victor Wembanyama has GOAT Potential
I didn’t watch the past 2 games but I was hoping he’d gotten past that bullshit but clearly he hasn’t. He has some insecurity about his height and doesn’t want people to think he’s only good because of his height. If he never grows out of that mindset and insecurity I sharply retract the best of all time talk. The ability and talent is already there. It’s just a matter of mindset. But mindset isn’t a small thing so we’ll see.

He would try to play like a guard in Europe even if his coaches were firmly against it. I don't think there's anything wrong with trying in the early stages of his career because it can broaden his ability to do more than just play under the basket. Teams now are doubling him hard trying to deny him the ball/not allow him to get near the basket so him being more mobile and having more to his game is probably a good thing. Sometimes the easy looks just aren't there and he's going to force some bad shots, but he's already better at those bad shots that Giannis, at least he was last year.

The league wasn't going to just roll over for this guy, they're going to review the tapes and look for tendencies they can attack. His path to sustained greatness, like those who have come before him, will be how he adjusts to the adjustments defenses are making to him. Right now it looks like its better off to defend him with a shorter player who can get up into his space, especially if he's going to continue spending too much time out on the perimeter, and blitz him with sharp doubles and make the other Spurs beat you. His sweet spot is at the elbow, one long stride and he's pretty much at the rim.

That is how they would fade KD. Short dudes that will get up in his jersey every play.
