How much would you pay for this?
I'm just trying to gauge this idea I had about teaching SAT classes independently. And there's better place to look for answers than ISH
My credentials: I scored in the 95th percentile on this specific section of the SAT. I am a licensed elementary school teacher in my state. I have a Bachelor of Science from Ohio State University.
I meet Kaplan's SAT requirements to be a tutor, and I just interviewed with them, but I thought i could make more being an independent instructor.
Kaplan SAT charges $699 for an 18 hour class. This comes out to be $38.80 per hour.
How much do you think I should charge? I'm thinking like $15.00 per hour-long class. This is less than half of what Kaplan charges ($38.80) as you can see. Oh, and each class of mine will have 4 students.

I wouldn't do it for less than 20 if I was you because they should get more of a private setting if you are teaching only 4 students. What I mean is because there are less students they going to be more comfy and going to ask more questions, probably email you more, making your work harder than it should be.

charge maybe 30-45 an hour.
when you charge 15 dollars an hour parents think you are just some kid trying to make some extra money. Price yourself like a professional. Guitar lessons cost more than 15 dollars an hour. You can do individualized custom tutoring and Kaplan can't offer that.

Hmm...I was just assuming Kaplan courses had 4 students each. Do they have more than that?

I seen classrooms with as much as 20 students. But having less students is better for both the teacher and the students because both can feel more comfortable with each other. Either way if I was you I wouldn't charge less than 20$ because the work is not easy.

Will the Kaplan course come with study guides and books though? I felt they were far more useful than the teacher was. If they do, you'll be at a disadvantage until the kids can pick up the books for cheaper than the difference between your price and Kaplan's price.

Are you aware that the SATs are taken by high school kids?

Good point.
Yes, the Kaplan courses come with books and stuff.
I am thinking i'll find some well priced books to use as the text books for our class, and then i'll list this in my advertisement ("Only $X per hour-long course!...and the materials can be bought for only $100!")

Ones that need tutoring are surely 18+ by their senior year.

The $15/hr actually sounds good, but the kids having to buy material might be a turn off for most parents.
If you can get your hands on the test material and just make copies to sell at a cheap price or even give away for free (not sure if it'd be legal), you'd probably draw plenty of students who would pay for the course.

Whatever you decide, good luck! I'm sure you'll be helping these kids set up a bright future with this important test and it doesn't hurt to put some $ in your pocket
