Warriors trade Cory Joseph to Pacers

The Golden State Warriors have acquired a second round pick in the 2024 NBA Draft from the Indiana Pacers in exchange for guard Cory Joseph along with a 2025 second round draft pick (top-55 protected from Charlotte) and cash considerations, the team announced today.

The Pacers then waived Joseph.

Joseph, 32, appeared in 26 games with Golden State this season, tallying averages of 2.4 points, 1.6 assists and 1.2 rebounds in 11.4 minutes per game. Joseph signed with Golden State as a free agent on July 6, 2023.

Originally selected by the San Antonio Spurs with the 29th overall pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, Joseph owns career averages of 6.9 points, 3.0 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 21.7 minutes in 816 games (175 starts) over 13 seasons with the Warriors, Spurs, Toronto Raptors, Pacers, Sacramento Kings and Detroit Pistons.

Warriors guard Chris Paul out with hand injury

A rocky Warriors season continues to face new challenges.

Via the San Jose Mercury News:

Chris Paul will have surgery next week to repair a fracture in his left hand and is expected to be out four-to-six weeks after the operation, according to multiple reports.

Paul, 38, fractured his left hand in a collision with Detroit’s Jaden Ivey during Friday’s game against the Pistons. Paul has now had 11 hand injuries in his 19-year career, five to his non-shooting hand and six to his right.

At 17-18, the Warriors have the 10th best record in the Western Conference.

The latest on Klay Thompson and the Warriors

Per the San Jose Mercury News:

Nothing about Klay Thompson’s approach changed, he assures. But the numbers certainly have.

It wasn’t long ago that Thompson reached the lowest point of his season, benched for the first time in his career during crunch time in a loss to Phoenix on Dec. 12. He threw towels, kicked chairs and yelled at anyone around him who could hear. For as ugly it looked, something sparked in his vexed mind.

Since the Warriors game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Dec. 14, Thompson is averaging 25.7 points per game shooting 50% from 3 on 11 attempts per game. Golden State is a total plus-17 when Thompson is on the floor over those six games in which the Warriors have gone 5-1. He had 28 points, including 11 straight over a pivotal two-minute stretch in the Warriors’ 126-106 win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday night.

Warriors injury updates on Chris Paul and Gary Payton II

Warriors guard Chris Paul, who exited Tuesday’s game at Sacramento with 19 seconds remaining in the first quarter due to a lower left leg nerve contusion, underwent an MRI yesterday. The MRI confirmed the contusion and that there was no structural damage. He will be re-evaluated again on Monday.

Warriors guard Gary Payton II, who exited Tuesday’s game at Sacramento with 49 seconds remaining in the third quarter due to a right calf injury, underwent an MRI yesterday. The MRI confirmed a strained right calf for Payton. He will be re-evaluated again in one (1) week.

Warriors lose 6th straight game

The Warriors lost their sixth straight game in a 130-123 overtime heartbreaker to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday night. They fall to 6-8 and are 1-6 at home.

Andrew Wiggins’s fifth 3-pointer of the night gave the Warriors a three-point lead with 1.5 seconds remaining in regulation. But Chet Holmgren hit a desperation 3 out of the timeout to send the game to overtime.

Warriors forward Draymond Green suspended for incident with Rudy Gobert

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green has been suspended five games without pay for escalating an on-court altercation and forcibly grabbing Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert around the neck in an unsportsmanlike and dangerous manner, it was announced today by Joe Dumars, NBA Executive Vice President, Head of Basketball Operations. The length of the suspension is based in part on Green’s history of unsportsmanlike acts.

In addition, Warriors guard Klay Thompson and Timberwolves forward Jaden McDaniels and center Rudy Gobert have each been fined $25,000 for their roles in the incident, which started when Thompson and McDaniels became entangled and were grabbing and pulling at one another’s jerseys, and continued when Gobert entered the situation and wrapped up Thompson.

Thompson and McDaniels were each assessed a technical foul and ejected, while Green was assessed a Flagrant Foul 2 and ejected.

The incident occurred with 10:17 remaining in the first quarter of the Timberwolves’ 104-101 win over the Warriors on Nov. 14 at Chase Center.

Green will begin serving his five-game suspension on Thursday, November 16 when the Warriors host the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Reflections from Chet Holmgren on Steph Curry

Chet Holmgren proved himself a worthy adversary for the Warriors on Friday night, but it wasn’t the first time the Oklahoma City Thunder phenom has impressed Steph Curry on the court.

After Golden State’s 141-139 victory over OKC at Paycom Center in the NBA In-Season Tournament opener, the 21-year-old reflected on facing Curry for the first time after attending the SC30 Select Camp as a high schooler in 2019.

“First time playing against him in the NBA, obviously touched on it earlier but great players over there, and he’s one of them,” Holmgren told reporters of Curry after the game. “Definitely got to know where he is at all times. It’s a cool first full-circle moment, I guess you could call it, you know, going to his camp however many years ago it was and now being in the league with him and playing and competing.”

Warriors exercise contract options on Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody

The Golden State Warriors have exercised the fourth-year contract options on forward Jonathan Kuminga and guard Moses Moody.

Kuminga, 21, is averaging 11.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.00 steal and 21.6 minutes in three games this season. Selected by Golden State with the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, he became the youngest player in Warriors history to reach the 1,000-point plateau last season surpassing, Joe Smith. Kuminga owns career averages of 9.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 18.9 minutes in 140 games (28 starts).

Moody, 21, is averaging 9.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.50 steals and 19.4 minutes in four games (one start) this season. He was selected by Golden State with the 14th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft and owns career averages of 4.8 points, 1.7 rebounds and 12.6 minutes in 119 games (15 starts). Moody has scored in double figures in eight of his 15 starts.

Under the terms of the NBA’s current collective bargaining agreement, the first two years of a first round draft pick’s contract are guaranteed, while the third and fourth year of the contract are the team’s option.

On Klay Thompson and the Warriors

It seems likely Klay Thompson will be playing out the final year of his contract this season without an extension, but he’s not complaining.

Rather than bemoan the lack of a contract beyond this year, the 33-year-old Thompson sees it as an opportunity to “savor” what could technically be his final season with the Warriors.

“You never know what’s going to happen. I’m going to savor this as much as I can,” Thompson said hours before Friday night’s game in Sacramento. “Especially in this uniform. I was here before it was sweet, before it was four championships.”

No contract extension agreement expected just yet between Warriors and Klay Thompson

Per NBC Sports Bay Area:

It doesn’t appear as if Klay Thompson and the Warriors will be working out a contract extension any time soon.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski joined “NBA Countdown” prior to Golden State’s preseason matchup with the Sacramento Kings and reported that the two sides have not made progress toward an extension and it’s becoming increasingly likely the Warriors star could enter free agency after the 2023-24 NBA season.

“I’m told that there has been absolutely no progress on a Klay Thompson extension in Golden State and that they are both still apart on years and money and there’s a very real possibility that Klay Thompson goes into free agency next summer without a deal and I think that’s where it gets complicated for Golden State,” Wojnarowski said.
