Rockets sign Willie Cauley-Stein

The Houston Rockets have signed free agent center Willie Cauley-Stein.

Cauley-Stein (7-0, 240) was briefly with the Rockets during the preseason before joining their NBA G League affiliate Rio Grande Valley. He signed a 10-day contract with Houston on Feb. 27 and rejoined the Vipers following that stint. Rio Grande Valley advanced to the G League Finals, which concluded on Thursday.

In 422 career NBA games with 256 starts, Cauley-Stein has averaged 8.7 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 22.0 minutes per game. He is shooting 54.4% from the floor for his career, including 59.0% over the past three seasons.

In 10 regular season games for the Vipers, he has averaged 9.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.3 blocks and 1.2 steals in 28.3 minutes per game while shooting 64.5% from the floor. Cauley-Stein also appeared in 16 games for Rio Grande Valley during the G League Showcase.

The seven-year NBA veteran was originally the sixth overall pick by Sacramento in the 2015 draft and spent last season with Dallas and Philadelphia. In 422 career games with 256 starts, Cauley-Stein has averaged 8.7 ppg, 5.9 rpg and 1.4 apg in 22.0 mpg while shooting 54.4% from the floor.

In seven seasons, he has appeared in 422 games with 256 starts while averaging 8.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 1.4 assists in 22.0 minutes per game. For his career, Cauley-Stein has shot 54.4% from the floor, including 59.0% over the past three seasons.

Over a span of three seasons from 2017-18 through 2019-20, Cauley-Stein was the only player in the league to have averaged at least 11.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 2.0 apg and 1.00 spg in fewer than 31.0 mpg. He is the only player in the history of the University of Kentucky to have recorded career totals of at least 500 rebounds, 200 blocks and 100 steals.

Philadelphia 76ers sign Willie Cauley-Stein to 10-day contract

Philadelphia 76ers President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey announced today that the team has signed Willie Cauley-Stein to a 10-day contract.

After being picked with the No. 6 overall selection in the 2015 NBA Draft, Cauley-Stein has appeared in 420 career games (255 starts) for Sacramento, Golden State and Dallas. He holds career averages of 8.8 points and 5.9 rebounds in 22.1 minutes per outing while shooting .544 from the floor. Cauley-Stein has shot 50-percent-or-better from the field in each of his six professional seasons, including his rookie season where he was named to the All-Rookie Second Team.

Prior to being drafted, Cauley-Stein played three seasons at the University of Kentucky where he was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year as a junior. That season, he was also selected to the All-SEC First Team, the All-SEC Defensive Team and the USA Today first team All-American Team. During his time as a Wildcat, Cauley-Stein recorded 233 blocks which are the second-most in program history. Cauley-Stein also is the only player in school history to record at least 500 rebounds, 200 blocks and 100 steals.

The Spearville, Kansas native will wear No. 00 with the 76ers.

Mavericks exercise contract option on Willie Cauley-Stein

The Dallas Mavericks have picked up the second-season contract option for center Willie Cauley-Stein that is reportedly worth $4.1 million.

Per the Dallas Morning News, “Cauley-Stein seemingly became more expendable Saturday when Dallas acquired promising 21-year-old center Moses Brown from Boston to complete the trade of Josh Richardson from the Mavericks to the Celtics. A Mavericks source, however, said on Saturday the team planned to keep Cauley-Stein “unless something crazy falls in our lap.”

Cauley-Stein (7-0, 240) holds career averages of 9.1 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 22.6 minutes in 402 career games (253 starts) with Sacramento, Golden State and Dallas. Last season, he averaged 5.3 points, 4.5 rebounds and 17.1 minutes in 53 games (16 starts). The career 54.5% shooter has shot at least 50% from the floor in each of his seven NBA seasons, including a career-high 63.2% (115-182 FG) last year.

The Spearville, Kansas, native was acquired by Dallas from Golden State on Jan. 25, 2020, in exchange for a 2020 second round pick.

Cauley-Stein was the sixth overall pick by Sacramento in the 2015 NBA Draft after a three-year career at University of Kentucky. He earned NBA All-Rookie Second Team honors following his rookie campaign in 2015-16.

As a junior at Kentucky (2014-15), Cauley-Stein was named First Team All-SEC, the SEC Defensive Player of the Year and a consensus First Team All-American. Cauley-Stein was also a two-time All-SEC Defensive Team selection (2013-14, 2014-15) and garnered SEC All-Freshman Team honors for the Wildcats in 2012-13.

The Sacramento Kings announced today the team has exercised its third-year option on center Willie Cauley-Stein, according to Kings Vice President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Vlade Divac.

This was an expected move. Cauley-Stein is one of the team’s main young building blocks.

Cauley-Stein is entering his second season with the Kings after being selected with the sixth overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. An All-Rookie Second Team honoree last season, Cauley-Stein registered 7.0 points (.563 FG%, .648 FT%), 5.3 rebounds and 1.00 blocks in 21.4 minutes per contest over 66 games played (started 39) in 2015-16.

Willie Cauley-Stein out 4-6 weeks with finger injury

Sacramento Kings rookie center Willie Cauley-Stein sustained an open dislocation of his right index finger late in the fourth quarter tonight against the Boston Celtics in Mexico City.

After evaluation by Kaiser Permanente doctors on site, it was determined that Cauley-Stein will miss approximately 4-6 weeks of action.

The Kings are 7-13 this season. Cauley-Stein is averaging 4.6 points and 5.2 rebounds in 19.0 minutes per game.
