Re: Why is Greenland not recognized as a continent?
In addition to the reasons everyone else has listed greenlnad isn't even one solid piece of land. Without the ice it would appear like a large archipelago with an inland sea separating several large and small island groupings.

It's actually bigger than the lower 48. It covers all of North Africa IE Egypt Libya etc.
You have to add Alaska to make the sizes comparable.

Re: Why is Greenland not recognized as a continent?
You have to look at an actual globe to see how the real sizes look in comparison visually.

Re: Why is Greenland not recognized as a continent?
One thing to remember regarding size is what it actually encompasses.
For example:
Most of China is desert, that's why most of it's population is in the East
Russia is also mostly barren. Ditto for Australia and Canada. However by their sheer size they still have a ton of resources relatively speaking in a country comparison.
The US has the most arable land in the world(land where you can farm)
India has the second most arable land in the world.
I believe Africa has more arable land than the rest of the world combined.

Re: Why is Greenland not recognized as a continent?
Greeland is way smaller than people think. It's not even close to the size of Africa, it looks that big becuase you're basically taking a map which is a globe or sphere and laying it out flat, which distorts the landmass sizes.
Here's what Greenland looks like if you put it on an actual globe...
