I don't think that we're the smartest and I think there's been smarter civilizations, but I don't think intelligent life has gotten past those bonds either. I believe it to be a law life cannot break past.

it's in our (and others) nature to destroy ourselves.
other civilizations may never have lasted long enough to traverse space at any significant capacity before they bombed iran on behalf of israel, got their entire world involved and set off a chain reaction of their world's nuclear arsenal completely killing off their species.
otoh once a civilization gets past the point of mastering their self-destructive tendencies, anything is possible. but is it even possible to get past that point? it would take a hell of a lot of cooperation as a civilization and the larger that civilization is, the harder it would be. it's frankly hard to imagine.
we ourselves are probably on the tail-end of our timeline. there's just way too many things that can go wrong now on a grand scale and knowing our nature as humans, it won't be long before we provoke it into happening.

I think a big part of a civilization furthering itself is how well everyone works together for the greater good. Largely in this world that doesn't happen often or even at all collectively. Sometimes you'll get a country that unites over something of significance that forces them to do that. For example when 9/11 happened I've never witnessed the country more united than during that time period in my life. People were just nicer to each other, but that didn't last long and fast forward to now the United Status is more fractured now than it has been in decades and maybe longer.
If intelligent life evolves naturally anything close to how human beings did socially it will be difficult for them to progress. Human beings throughout history facture themselves into smaller groups and tribes. We talk about equal rights, equal this, equal that, but it's human nature to diversify and give everything a label and establish a hierarchy of social standards and judge each other.
In other words I think it's difficult for intelligent life to progress to it's full potential because naturally we as humans don't work together majority of the time for the greater good.

How do you explain all the stories that are similar between cultures separated by distance and time that tell about celestial beings coming from the heavens though? Ancient Indian, Chinese, Mesopotamian, Meso American, Ancient Egypt etc have all stories that revolve around being visited by beings that came from the heavens to visit us and humans have been reporting unusual crafts and lights in the sky since recorded history. Obviously a lot of it can be attributed to natural phenomena but not all. All a coincidence? I really don't know, just putting it out there.

I just chalk it up to coincidence or our current misunderstanding of what those cultures were trying to convey in ancient drawings or writings. It's human nature overall for us to establish a higher power and believe in a god. We like to think there's a meaning to ourselves. I think it's just different cultures establishing their own version of a god they worship. It's no different than two ancient tribes having no contact each other, but somehow they both ended up inventing the wheel or discovering fire.

I think what brings a country together is the perception of a common enemy. That's what brought Americans together in the aftermath of 9/11. It's also why a country like Canada is completely unified now, because everyone perceives America/Trump as the enemy so all petty differences are put aside( temporarily).

That's definitely a big factor and usual case. Also what helps unifying a country is the cultures within the country itself. The United States is a melting pot. We have so many different people from different cultures and races that are Americans. This within itself leads to a lot of conflict because of the clashing of beliefs. Then you have a nation like Japan who for the most part are all Japanese who mostly believe in the religions of Shinto and Buddhism. It's still within their culture to be unified. For example, there are very little public trash cans in Japan. Everyone is expected to carry their own trash and take it home with them. And when you visit Japan it's one of the cleanest public systems in the world even with city like Tokyo with 14+ million people because most people believe in being respectful and the greater whole.

Am I right in assuming you've been there? It's been on my bucket list for ages.

Japan? No. It's on my bucket list too. I've studied a bit of modern Japan and had a close friend to there for a year and I picked his brain.

That's what I've heard! Maybe I'll look into that in a few years once my daughter is on her own. I almost dated a Vietnamese woman, but she came off extremely self-centered and materialistic so I didn't dabble in that. Super pretty though.

Ah I see, got ya. I've heard similar things about Japanese society, there is a culture of respect that permeates through their way of life. As opposed to 'muah rights!' westerners who've been raised on individualism and generally not giving a shit about anyone outside your immediate circle. And as you said, the US being a melting pot makes it difficult with so many ethnicities and cultures trying to find common ground. I like variety myself but there is something to be said for a society being homogenized through a singular culture in terms of how it functions( people thinking more in terms of community and doing their part to improve the whole, as opposed to living for yourself like we do in the west leading to the shitshow we have now).

Usually I don't find Asian women attractive looking. Most of the time it's because they lack hips or ass which I'm a sucker for.

Richer, better educated ones are. Don't go deep into the rural parts to find them.
