We really do have a mental illness epidemic in this country. Once you've committed a violent crime, I think you should be mandated to stay in a facility if you're mentally ill, their behavior is just too unpredictable.

Has it factually been established this was racially motivated? I understand the optics that she was the only white passenger on the train, but until we get confirmation on that, I'd still lean on it being a random crime driven by insanity. He sat behind her for 5 minutes being perfectly normal, then without even talking or touching her abruptly stabbed her 3 times. Imho this crime seemed to have no rhyme or reason to it, it seemed like something he did spur of the moment and was likely hallucinating while doing it. By all means, if it turns out he did this specifically because she was white, I'd have no issue admitting I was wrong.

The other passengers who literally didn't even attempt to help her and walked away are also the villains of this story, that's arguably the more depressing aspect of this. If I saw someone being stabbed I would've tried to help and call the authorities.

If someone is born schizo, they should not auto be locked up. But I do think they should perhaps wear a monitor? Or their meds must be observed and recorded by law. Or perhaps it is based around how often they have "episodes", etc. The ones with violent background locked up.

I do think it is very fair to say this guy should NOT have been roaming the streets. So something needs to be done there. But the problem is to have real discussion you have to get out trying to score tribal political points where you are just declaring that the issue is that all black people are bad, because that goes no where real fast.

Murder rates and violent crime in general have been falling hard for a long time now. There was an uptick during covid, but now that is way in the rearview and we near all time lows in that area.
