Lightbulb Morant disappointed in the coaching staff's lack of belief in Ja-ball

A frustrated Ja Morant told reporters to "go ask the coaching staff" about his struggles during the Memphis Grizzlies' 117-112 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night.

Morant was held to a season-low eight points, going 3-of-14 from the field, and seven assists. Asked about what he noticed in the game, Morant was again terse.

"According to them, probably don't play me, honestly," Morant said. "That's basically what the message was. It's cool."

Morant gave similar responses to ask the coaching staff when responding to questions without explaining further. He is averaging a career-low 28.5 minutes through six games this season.

To be fair to the coaches, despite his various talents, the Grizzlies have a history of playing as well or better when he's not in the game.

He's a career 31% three point shooter, which just does not jive with the state of the game now. For context, thats 2% lower than Josh Giddey who was much maligned in OKC for not shooting well as a 20 year old. Ofc Giddey has made heaps of progress since then, probably as a result of working on it. Who knows what Ja's work habits are. You get the sense he may feel like his game is already perfect.

I dunno what the Grizzlies plan to do in terms of playing him, sitting him, trading him. But Im sure when the time comes someone will give him a nice big contract just on reputation alone. And all the five figure fans will cheer for the hundreds of millions he'll make off their support, regardless of what he contributes. Viva la fish!

Anyway I could definitely see his dad publicly threatening the head coach. We'll see.

Throw another few hundred mil at him, everything will be fine.

As long as he does a 360 dunk now and then that makes him worth half the salary cap.

You can't win with a guy like this as your leader and so called best player. I'd rather have Caruso on my team than this bozo.

    Yeah.

And he does have talent. But his lack of shooting progress... it seems like every other player in the league who starts as a poor shooter gets SOMEWHAT better over time. You have to question whether Morant works on it at all, or if he's just too busy shooting rap videos where his glock makes a cameo. It's very possible his offseason approach is "12 game good, 12 game dont need no work."

Also I dont even wanna put it all on him. Against OKC in the playoffs last year he found Edey on some nice feeds inside early when the games were still close, and Edey just couldnt stop bungling them. And those missed opportunities snowballed in a number of games. To the point the coaches too have to be questioned for the amount they played Edey when he clearly wasnt ready. So I'm not saying like "Ja's the one guy holding them back."

But it was very obvious from the beginning he was not a guy you just max right away and trust he'll be the professional he needs to be. But they did it anyway. And maybe it was they thought it was the right move, maybe they feared the fan backlash. I wish contracts required public disclosure of either "Hey, we're doing this because we're stupid" or "We're doing this because our fans are stupid."

I'm always left wondering which was the case.

Yeah early in his career I liked Ja but I am out now. If the Amnesty clause still existed it would probably be a good idea to use it on him

Dude had almost unlimited potential, but he seems to have declined the last couple years instead of getting better.

    Unlimited potential?

Because he can jump really high and dunk and he's very quick?

I always saw him as a Derrick Rose type player, but much more of a douche.

Top tier athleticism and exciting to watch, but with very noticeable flaws. Those types of athletic players gain lots of fans from casuals while they ignore the other flaws in their game. He was never going to be the face of the league like Full Court once thought.

Hed be a good sixth man, a la Malik Monk.

But the hops were just too crazy, they had no choice but to make him the max salary centerpiece.

Because he was one of the best finishers at the rim and had crazy athleticism. All he needed to do was develop a good shot. Which he hasn't done yet.
