Tatum DESPERATELY chucking to protect his ppg. Hard to watch.
Saw the 4th quarter of Celtics-mavs and the C's were up about 15 the whole quarter, Tatum was SPAMMING shots one after another, and when he wasnt bricking he was turning it over trying to force all those shots up himself. It kinda looked like the playoffs this year.
This dude's insistence on trying to be the player the media (incorrectly) thinks he is, could become tricky in the playoffs if the C's have harder matchups than they did last year.
Tatum is not an elite iso player. But he's perpetually trying to prove himself as such. It's awkward af.
Tatum finishes with 24 on 8-22. Brown finished with 22 on 10-21.
D White with 23 points from 16 shots, KP with 18 points on 12 shots.

On ability he should be. It's hard for people to really see it I think because he misses so much time, but when healthy he's actually living up to the unicorn label. When he gets those smaller switches theres just nothing his defender can do. And yet he has logo range from three and is a pretty good shooter. Great at rim running and of course an outstanding rim protector. His upper body has really filled out, hes become very hard to stop.
But he just doesnt get the touches because Tatum and Brown are the media-billed superstars on that team and theyre not gonna take a step back. (Theyll take stepbacks, and a bunch of them, even tho neither is great at them, but theyre not gonna take a step back). So Porzingis ends up taking 12 shots and scoring the same amount of points those guys are getting on 20+ shots. A lot of times on the pick n roll theyll specifically look away from him so they wont even know if hes open. As guards they could run his point total up crazy like Stockton did for Malone, but their egos are simply too fragile.

Tatum isnt an elite isolation player yet leads in points per possession

Ok, and Domantas Sabonis leads in three point percentage. Do you really think hes an elite three point shooter?
You can find anomalies with any stat. The Tatum one is likely a combination of a hot start and the respect teams show Boston's three point shooters defensively. Tatum recently has been looking more like his playoff self from last year: a pedestrian scorer by top level standards who tries really hard to prove hes elite. The law of averages suggests he's not gonna remain the top ppp scorer long term. It *might* last the rest of this season but even thats unlikely.
Theres a reason this guy got benched on team USA. You think Kerr had an agenda? No. Tatum just really isnt the guy the media acts like. Boston is a phenomenal team, but average fans dont understand team. Team concepts are intricate. The fan needs a face. Simple and biologically intuitive. They need a face to worship or scorn. And because Boston is so good, the media presents this as a defacto proof of Tatum's eliteness. And actually because of his defense and decent rebounding, he is certainly a valuable player overall. But hes not the scorer he thinks he is, or that I suspect even a lot of fans think he is.
It's clear he tries to be Mamba Mentality and its just really awkward.

When Derrick White went into a slump, the Celtics started losing consistently....we now know who the true best player is...its not Jalen brown its derrick white! Tatum has now been bumped to 3rd and is tied with Porzingis for 3rd best player.

Brown is legit, too. It’s really just Tatum. He is an all nba guy who can sell you out. Not something to bet on. Brown been a dawg.

Sabonis takes 2 to 3 shots from 3 a game. Tatum is 3rd in isolation possesions so i dont see how your example applys. Also i dont think Tatum's numbers are an anomly because they are similar to last season. Im also confused why his Olympics gets scrutinize when he already was the 2nd leading scorer on the 21 team.

Tatum is the Clyde Drexler to MJ.
Or is that being too generous?

They were up 15 and he was BLATANTLY attempting to go Mamba Mentality the entire quarter because he had under 20 points and he was trying to prove hes some kind of offensive lynchpin before the game ended.
