I wonder if ESPN will have the awareness not to run fanduel draft Kings or ESPN bet ads under the coverage.

I hope he’s innocent but just a thought I had in regards to the last case with Johntay Porter: doesn’t it kind of seem superfluous to ban players who intentionally throw games? Like what ****ing team is gonna ever sign a guy who you know was playing bad on purpose?

I feel like Hornets players should be allowed to do this. As compensation for being on the Hornets.

That said, reading the article he was apparently exonerated by a previous NBA investigation at the time and sounds like it was plausibly just a weird coincidence.

But as OP has pointed about before, Im sure it is possible for guys to be doing this regularly and getting away with it. The guys who get caught could be the minority. But it just seems so pointless, the NBA minimum salary now is like a million a year. To do this without drawing attention youd have to make very small infrequent bets, and what would really be the point? Youre gonna risk your million dollar salary for an extra 6k? It's so ill advised, youd have to really have a gambling sickness to even bother.

I think it would be easier for guys with a lot of ball control to manipulate stats to reach overs without seeming suspicious.

If Jokers brothers bet his over for any particular offensive stat you don’t think he could do it on demand?

Mightve been pressured by members of his entourage or family to help them make some extra cash and the Feds have the receipts and possibly some snitches.

If the amount was really low though like in the 1000s this is really stupid. Youd think the Feds would have bigger fish to fry.

I know very little while sports betting but it seems like NBA players could get away with this quite easily if they kind of aimed low and made sure to stay under the radar

I'd imagine MJ has done a TON of illegal gambling. But sort of a too big to fail situation since he was carrying an entire league. They usually go after small fish first but you never know if you'll get hit decades later.

Yeah MJ is the goat but I assume he was blood doping, coked out of his mind, and betting constantly. MJ would have never been successful in the iphone era. I think it's a Ty Cobb situation where we'll only hear the truth until long after he's dead.

Im sure he could but again if its an unusually big bet or someone is always winning it, it's gonna get flagged. You cant win big or consistently without drawing attention.

In fact this gives me the rare opportunity to use a lyric from a Gregory Isaacs song I really like:

"The higher the monkey climb, the more he is exposed."

Meaning it's hard to keep success a secret.

And it's not like college athletics coaching where you can take risks with the rules, get huge money and prestige, and since recruiting violations arent illegal for the most part the worst that happens is youll "have your championship vacated" long after you care.

If youre involved in sports fixing even if youre not caught right away you could end up with a record, have to pay the money back, and could go to jail.
