Wesley Person Interview
By InsideHoops.com
Wesley Person is a key member of the young Memphis
Grizzlies. As of the above date, he's leading the entire league in three-point
shooting percentage for the season. Inside Hoops caught up with Wesley before
a game in the world's coolest arena, Madison Square Garden.
InsideHoops.com: How often did you play with Chuck (Person) when you were younger?
Wesley Person: Well, we really didn't get a chance to really play against one another, we might have had a couple of shooting contests, but as far as playing together, or against one another, the age difference was too far apart. When he began in the pros, I was still in high school, so, these days high school players are capable of playing against professionals, but back then, very seldom did high school players could be NBA players, so we really didn't get a chance to play agains one another so much.
InsideHoops.com: So when you did play, he was too much older...
Wesley Person: So much older, so much bigger, too. Lot of experience. We really didn't get too much competition as far as playing one on one. When we were on the court, he did most of the teaching, I did most of the listening.
InsideHoops.com: At what point in your younger days did you realize that making the NBA was actually possible?
Wesley Person: Well, my freshman year, when I had a great freshman year in college, and I got a chance to play against the best young players and some of the all-star games, and that's when I realized that I'm just as good as the calibre of players of some of these top young guys.. if I'm ready for some of these guys as a freshman, so when I become a senior and I keep working, I can finish this dream off.
InsideHoops.com: At the NBA draft, did you have an idea who might take you?
Wesley Person: Yeah, I kinda knew. But my draft was a bit different. I thought three or four teams would take me. I knew for sure I was going to New Jersey, but things didn't work out that way, then I kinda fell down, then I worried a little bit, then Phoenix picked me. I couldn't have went to a better situation, with a lot of great players, a lot of guys that were leaders, I came into the league winning, and I learned a lot of stuff just by going to Phoenix.
InsideHoops.com: And back to Chuck, when you finally made it, what kind of things did he say to you?
Wesley Person: He still tried to keep me humble, he always tell me, "You ain't that good, you ain't good enough yet. You always got to continue to keep working, especially in the summer, you always try to add something to your game..." Because even though you don't use it, when the time comes, you have it. That's his saying, all the time. He'd say, "just make sure you keep working on your game, keep adding, keep getting better, because you never know when you'll have to use it."
