Nets crush Bucks to take game 1
By InsideHoops.com
New Jersey hosted game one of the Nets vs. Bucks first
round playoff matchup. The Nets came out strong right from the start and controlled
the entire game. Below are raw game notes, bringing you the info the other guys
leave out.
Just before tipoff, Kenyon Martin made sure fans were into it early by waving
his arms, bringing people to their feet.
The first four baskets of the game were three baskets and one assist by Jason
Kidd.
Sam Cassell tried to show a ref that he didn't knock the ball out by doing a little
jump-skip. To which the ref responded by doing one back to him.
The Nets are off to a very quick start.
Anthony Mason heard scattered boos, and no cheers, when checking in later in the
first.
Booties in Motion, the Nets dancers officially known as Power in Motion, came
out in their best outfits yet: slick black pants and tiny tank-tops. The booties
were in motion. Hot.
Toni Kukoc hit using the bankboard. That's right, not backboard. For Kukoc, I'm
calling it the bankboard. Don't ask why, it's a feeling, and I'm going with it.
Tim Thomas checked in and, like Mason, heard scattered boos.
End of the first quarter it's Nets 29 Bucks 20. The Nets shot 65%. Jason Kidd
had around 14 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds.
Dikembe Mutombo was in for New Jersey to start the second.
The Nets offense is rolling, while the Bucks are playing like they've never met
each other before.
With 6 minutes left in the half it's Nets 41 Bucks 28.
Kidd is a chess grandmaster in this game, tonight.
The Nets need to get rid of the "Party Zone," where, during a timeout, one lucky
section gets surrounded by Booties in Motion, which is good, but the fans in the
section are forced to hold signs up and dance around against their will, in awkward
and painful fashion.
Kidd is a ninja tonight, and the competition are a bunch of yellow-belts.
At the half it's Nets 55 Bucks 35.
A few minutes into the third quarter, Kenyon Marton hurt his ankle, went back
towards the locker room, but quickly returned, immediately came in and hit a shot,
drew a foul, grabbed several rebounds in a row, and then jumped 80 feet in the
air trying to dunk over Ervin Johnson, drawing a foul in the process. The injury
apparently isn't serious.
With 7 minutes to go in the third it's Nets 64 Bucks 48.
At 5:53, Booties in Motion came out, this time with blue pants that aren't as
good as the black ones, and white tank-tops that covered far more of our dancers
than earlier. Not quite as hot.
Gary Payton is 0-7 in the game so far. And the Nets are blocking his passing lanes
almost every play.
Kidd is a samurai out there tonight, and the competition are the guys who assist
the guys who make sushi. Or something.
With 4:31 to go it's Nets 72 Bucks 48.
If a HumVee vehicle (yeah, a Hummer, the SUV-like car) became an NBA player, it
would be Anthony Mason.
Around 1:20 left in the third, Kenyon Martin decided he was a cross between Magic
Johnson and George Gervin, running a three on two break, dribbling down the middle,
picking the ball up, faking a pass to the side but bringing the ball up and under
for a sweet finger-roll. So pretty.
Jason Kidd has 13 assists and the third quarter isn't even over yet.
The third quarter ended with a Lucious Harris three. It's Nets 89 Bucks 60. This
one's over.
Kidd is playing the Bucks like a yo-yo.
Kidd should turn to the Bucks and say, "I sank your battleship."
Kidd just sent the Bucks to jail, without letting them pass Go or collect $200.
Kidd's trashing the Bucks like last week's newspaper.
With 8:22 during a timeout, Arlette, the main National Anthem singer for Nets
games, came out doing a "Twist and Shout" contest, where she sang while fans danced.
Only, the fans mostly refused to dance, and then as the timeout ended, thanked
Arlette for her efforts by booing her. Not loudly, just scattered boos, but since
there was no cheering, the boos were noticible.
With 6 minutes left, Gary Payton still has 0 points. It's Nets 99 Bucks 75. This
one's over. Fans are rushing home to catch Jerry Springer reruns.
With around 4:10 left in the game, Gary Payton got his first points. He quickly
racked up a bunch of baskets late, after it was long over.
With 2:12 left, during free throws, a fan from the upper section of the arena
yelled "Hey George, you better have practice tomorrow!" and the guy's voice echoed
around the arena. It's that quiet. Fans have all rushed home to watch Saved by
the Bell reruns on cable tv.
It's over, folks. The Nets dominated this game. There's no point in even reviewing statistics. A fantastic start to the playoffs for New Jersey, and a very shaky one for Milwaukee. Game 2 of the series is Tuesday night.
A long Sam Cassell interview coming later today.
