From September 5-14, the world of basketball centered on Sweden, where the 2003 Eurobasket (European Championships for men) took place. Sixteen national teams, representing their countries, fought for the title of "European Champion 2003." The 2001 recent champions, Serbia-Montenegro, and the 2003 host country, Sweden, automatically qualified to compete in the tournament. Thirty other teams competed, and the top 14 qualified to make up the 16 team field.

The European championship is divided into four groups. Various local cities in Sweden will host the preliminaries. From the quarterfinals and on, the tournament will take place in The Globe Arena in Stockholm.

The European Championship takes place every two years.
