Mavs send Walker to Hawks for Terry

The Dallas Mavericks keep reshaping their team, while
the Atlanta Hawks are trying to actually have a team.
The Atlanta Hawks have obtained three-time All-Star Antoine
Walker and Tony Delk from the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Jason Terry, Alan
Henderson and a future first-round draft pick.
"We have acquired two outstanding talents in Antoine
and Tony and both will address important needs on our basketball club," said
Hawks GM Billy Knight. "They bring a tremendous amount of big-game experience,
a winning attitude and playoff expertise to our revamped roster. Antoine is a
proven three-time All-Star with extensive playoff experience who has the ability
to play many positions for us, and he will fit in nicely in our system. Tony will
give us steady play on a nightly basis at the point and he has the chance to really
produce in Atlanta."
Last season, the versatile Walker averaged 14.0 points,
8.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 34.6 minutes, as the only Maverick to start all
82 games. He finished second on the talented squad in rebounding as well as assists,
in addition to hitting 42.8 percent of his field goals, 26.9 percent from three-point
range and 55.4 percent from the foul line. Walker recorded 60 double-figure scoring
games, and finished with 20 or more points 18 times.
Although Walker had a solid year with the Mavs last season,
his skills aren't quite what the team needs. Dallas already has plenty of scorers
and guys who can move the ball. They need rugged rebounders, role players and
guys to do the dirty work. Most of all, they need defenders. Walker is a very
good scorer and passer, and decent rebounder.
Besides those general team needs, Dallas needed to replace
Steve Nash, who left for Phoenix as a free agent. That's where Jason Terry comes
in. Terry isn't a prototype point guard, to say the least. Although he can pass,
Terry is really a shooting guard in a point guard's body. Still, he should fit
in and continue the Maverick tradition of scoring buckets in a big way.
Also, Jason Terry isn't an especially great defender,
which makes him fit in with the Mavs even more.
There were rumors that the Nets were in talks with the
Mavs, discussing a possible deal that would send Jason Kidd back to Dallas, but
with this trade today, those discussions are over.
Terry has two seasons left before he's a free agent.
Alan Henderson, meanwhile, can come off the bench, rebound
and bang a bit, and score some garbage buckets.
The trade of Henderson snaps his stretch as the second-longest
tenured player with the same team in the NBA currently (behind Indiana's Reggie
Miller), having spent his first nine seasons with the Hawks. He was slowed by
injury (various back ailments) last season, appearing in six games and averaging
4.0 ppg and 3.5 rpg (.476 FG%, .667 FT%).
Getting Antoine Walker is a nice move for the Atlanta
Hawks. Walker's a star and should put up huge stats. He's also fun to watch. Alongside
rookies Josh Childress and Josh Smith, perhaps this season some fans might actually
attend Hawks games.
Atlanta, however, is not guaranteed to have Walker for
a long time. His contract ends at the end of the upcoming season. It can be assumed
that the Hawks talked to him about sticking around and were satisfied with his
response.
Tony Delk can come off of Atlanta's bench and pour in
some points.
This deal is expected to be made official on Wednesday.
