Qyntel Woods Interview
By InsideHoops.com
InsideHoops.com's
Jeff Lenchiner and two other media guys met and spoke
with Qyntel Woods after his workout with the Knicks
a week and a half ago. Woods, coming out of junior college,
is expected to be taken early or mid first round in
the 2002 NBA Draft. Woods was in a pretty quiet mood
today, but note what he said when a question was asked
about which part of his offensive game needs the most
work.
What's your main goal in these
workouts?
Woods: Try to prove myself. I'm
from junior college so I have to prove myself, to the
players and to the coach.
And when you're done with workouts,
are the teams smiling?
Woods: Yeah, they smile.
Do you feel teams go over you
with a fine-toothed comb?
Woods: Yeah, they really watch
me, see how I go along, see how well I do.
Does it help going against top
guys, like Jared Jeffries...
Woods: Yeah, they're real good,
playing against them, they make me realize why I'm here.
What offensive skills are your
best, and what needs more work?
Woods: I need to work on my defense,
that's what I need to work on more.
Are you another Tracy McGrady?
Does saying that put too much pressure on you?
Woods: Ain't no pressure, I just
go out and do what I do. If they think that, I let 'em
think it.
What are your goals, being picked
in the first round, etc.
Woods: It'll mean a lot, it's
hard coming from junior college, so it'll mean a lot.
What are your workout goals?
Woods: My defense, that's what
I'm focusing on right now, my defense.
So, what, foot quickness?
Woods: Foot quickness, yeah. Lateral
movement.
Who made you the kind of player
you are today, besides yourself, any one person?
Woods: No one person, I just worked
hard, I had a couple of coaches that pushed me...
Was it more coaches or friends
on the street
Woods: More my friends, I had
a couple of friends that pushed me to play.
How much confidence do you have
to have in your ability when you go against guys who
are coming out of big colleges
Woods: You have to have a lot
of confidence going up against guys like Jared Jeffrieds,
Caron Butler...
And when you go up against them,
do you feel like you hold your own
Woods: Yeah, I think I held my
own.
When did you decide that you were
going pro this year.
Woods: Mid-season.
