EXPLANATION / NBA BOX SCORES HELP
NBA box scores show game statistics for individual NBA games. There are live stats services that monitor stats as the game goes along, but the stats aren't official until after the game.
Most NBA box scores show the same basic statistics. "Pos" refers to the position of the player (F = forward, G = guard, C = center). In NBA games, five players start for each team - two forwards, two guards and one center. "MIN" refers to minutes - how many minutes the player played in the game. "FGM" refers to Field Goals Made - meaning, how many shots during the game (not including free throws) the player took. FGA refers to Field Goals Attempted - also, not including free throws. FGM and FTA do include three-point attempts, which are also usually recorded separately. "FTM" and "FTA" refers to Free Throws Made and Free Throws Attempted. Free throws are shot from the free throw line, which is 15 feet from the rim. "OFF" "DEF" and "TOT" refers to rebounds: Offensive Rebounds, Defensive Rebounds, and Total Rebounds. "AST" refers to Assists. "PF" refers to Personal Fouls. "ST" refers to Steals. "TO" refers to turnovers. "BLK" refers to Blocks. And last but not least, "PTS" refers to Points scored in the game.
The "Totals" at the bottom for each team are the combined average stats for the team for that game.
Of course, NBA statistics never tell the whole story. But they do tell a lot of it.
