Andre Iguodala Interview

The Philadelphia 76ers recently traded Allen Iverson, and they're expected to part ways with Chris Webber soon, in the form of a buyout. They're rebuilding. Wednesday night in Madison Square Garden InsideHoops.com editor Jeff Lenchiner met with Andre Iguodala, the team's best and brightest young star, for an exclusive interview.
InsideHoops.com: Talk about how the team has changed since Allen Iverson got traded.
Andre Iguodala: We lost that dynamic scorer, a guy who can create on his own. So we have to be on each other a little bit more as far as getting each other open shots, making the extra pass, executing plays all the way.
InsideHoops.com: It's an interesting dynamic, the balance between having a superstar but sometimes doing a bit too much watching, and not having that player and then the entire team being forced to do more than they're used to. You feeling it, the need to step up a lot?
Andre Iguodala: Yeah. I think you just have to step up. When you have a face of the franchise like Allen, everyone pretty much plays their role to support him. Now that he's gone, some guys have that opportunity to step up, show what they're capable of doing, other guys that's just what they have to do, they have to pick up some numbers to pick up what we lost.
InsideHoops.com: Were you expecting that Iverson was going to get traded? What was your reaction when you first found out?
Andre Iguodala: I didn't really think about it. I didn't know it was going to happen. I stay focused on the game. Continue to play. And when it happened, I said, just have to step up and play hard.
InsideHoops.com: The latest is that Chris Webber is probably being bought out. The team is basically rebuilding, and you're clearly a centerpiece.
Andre Iguodala: I'm really trying to stay focused on getting better every single game. We got a great point guard now in Andre Miller. Sam [Dalembert] has been stepping up his game. It's a challenge that I look forward to every single day. Just getting better as a player, becoming a better team player, becoming a leader. Just hopefully being able to expand my game every year, hopefully becoming an all-star calibre player. And being able to take my team far to the ultimate goal of a championship.
InsideHoops.com: And with Andre Miller, now you have a true point guard, a guy who instead of being able to drop 30 whenever he wants can dish 10 assists whenever he wants. How's that been for you?
Andre Iguodala: It's making me work harder, getting open, cutting hard, staying focused on cuts. The ball's coming, so, looking for it. Not relaxing on offense. I'm getting a good groove during the game, not being stand-still, so it's helping me out a lot.
