Glenn
Robinson was born in 1973, in Gary, Indiana. He went to Roosevelt High
School, kicked NCAA butt at Purdue, and was the first pick in the 1994
NBA Draft, taken by the team he's an NBA All Star with today, the Milwaukee
Bucks. I had a few minutes with Glenn recently.
Jeff
Lenchiner:
Growing up, who were some of your favorite players?
Glenn
Robinson:
Well, growing up, in Gary, we get all the Chicago games, so I used to want
to play like Scottie Pippen, because we were about the same size. I played
center in high school, so, I said, "I can't play center in the NBA, I have
to be able to dribble the ball and do some more stuff, and handle the ball,
and kinda be an all around player," so, that's why I looked at Scottie
Pippen's game.
Jeff:
When did you really develop that killer shot?
Glenn
Robinson:
I'd say in college. In college. When I was prop 48, when I had to sit out,
I had the whole year to work on my game, and that was the biggest thing
I worked on, was shooting the ball... I was practicing every day, day-time,
night-time, whatever it took.
Jeff:
Is there anyone right now at your position in this league that you think
is underrated?
Glenn
Robinson:
The most underrated player I think at my position would be [Shareef] Abdur-Rahim.
He's a great player, he just don't get the recognition that he deserves,
I think if he was somewhere else, not saying he needs to leave Vancouver,
but if he was somewhere else, he'd probably get a lot more attention and
a lot more notoriety for what he does, but, he's a great scorer, he can
rebound, and he's a very athletic player.
Jeff:
When did you get your nickname (the Big Dog)?
Glenn
Robinson:
Man, that came from college, a lot time ago...
Jeff:
Who made it up?
Glenn
Robinson:
The assistant coach, and a janitor, at Mackey arena.
